The Georgetown Hoyas dropped their first game of the season, losing to the Kansas Jayhawks in the opening round of the Maui Invitational. The Hoyas were plagued by long stretches without baskets and a defense that game up too many uncontested dunks, most of them coming from Thomas Robinson, who led all scorers with 20 points. Jason Clark scored 15 points to lead the Hoyas.
The first half was close throughout, with both teams struggling early from beyond the arc. Kansas took a nine point lead late in the half, but the Hoyas were able to answer right back and keep the lead from getting out of hand, and Georgetown went into the locker room down three, 32-29.
The second half was a struggle offensively for Georgetown, as the Hoyas went without a field goal for an eight minute stretch. However, the Hoyas still found themselves in contention, trailing by only three points with under two minutes to play. A basket by Elijah Johnson put the Jayhawks up five with a minute to go. On the ensuing possession, Jason Clark hit a three pointer with 30 seconds left in the game to cut the deficit to two, and after a time out the Hoyas fouled. Travis Releford made both ends of a one-and-one to push the lead back to four. Clark then missed a three point attempt, and the Hoyas fell 67-63.
The Hoyas face a quick turnaround, returning to the court to take on Chaminade at 4:30 PM. That game will be televised on ESPN2.
