The Georgetown Hoyas advanced to 4-1 with a thrilling overtime win over the #8 Memphis Tigers in the 5th place game of the EA Sports Maui Invitational Tournament. The Hoyas were led by Jason Clark’s game-high 26 points off of 9-17 shooting. Henry Sims added 24 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists.
The first half saw Georgetown stretch to a ten point lead after a 19-2 run early on. But the Tigers fought back and at the intermission, the Hoyas only led by five, 47-42.
The second half was a highly contested affair that included nine lead changes and eight ties. After a timeout by Coach Thompson, the Hoyas in-bounded the ball down by two with under a minute to play. Henry Sims couldn’t connect, but a putback by freshman Greg Whittington tied the game up at 78, and after the Tigers came up empty on the other end, the stage was set for overtime.
In the extra period, the Hoyas continued to go inside with Henry Sims scoring five points in the overtime. Memphis did not score any field goals in the extra five minutes, earning all 10 of their points from the free throw line. Down by one with under a minute left to play, Jason Clark knocked down a three-pointer to give Georgetown a lead they would not relinquish.
The Hoyas are now ready to head home from Maui going 2-1 in the tournament, with their next game on Monday back at the Verizon Center against IUPUI. Tipoff is set for 7:00pm.
