Georgetown withstood a sloppy performance to eventually pull away from the Wichita State Shockers 58-50 in the opening round of the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Florida. The Hoyas were led by Austin Freeman, who scored a game-high 18 points on 6-10 shooting. DaJuan Summers scored 14 points all in the second half, and Greg Monroe added 11 points. The Hoyas are now 3-0 to start the season.

Georgetown opened the game with a 9-0 run, scoring easy baskets in transition. The defense was also sharp, as the Shockers started the game 3-21 from the field. After the opening minutes the shooting cooled off considerably for the Hoyas. Georgetown went through a 10 minute stretch in the first half without scoring a field goal. Monroe and Freeman were the only offense for Georgetown early on, combining for 21 of the team’s 26 first half points. The Hoyas led 26-22 at halftime.

In the second half, the Hoyas defense continued to be strong, but the offense struggled, allowing Wichita State to close the gap, eventually cutting the lead to 43-42 with six minutes to play. Summers responded with his second three pointer of the half to give Georgetown a small cushion, and once again the Hoyas sealed the deal at the foul line, going 8-8 from the stripe in the final minute.

Georgetown moves into the semifinal Friday at 1 PM against Tennessee who defeated Siena 78-64 in the first game of the tournament.
