The Hoyas have a difficult road test tomorrow against Old Dominion. The Ted Constant Convocation Center is a very nice arena in Norfolk, Virginia. The Georgetown game has been sold out for a while, and the crowd will be hungry for a major upset. ODU comes from the CAA which is a much underrated conference. This game is a rare opportunity for a smaller conference to host a school from a power conference, and the Monarchs will be ready to make the most of it. Old Dominion will be playing for their fans and for their conference.

In my family, as in most families, there is a large debate over the best way to eat Thanksgiving leftovers. It is about a 50-50 split between those preferring a cold turkey sandwich and those who would rather heat up the turkey along with mashed potatoes and gravy. As the college basketball season heads into December, the matchups are heating up faster than yams in a microwave. Yesterday, the Big Ten/ACC Challenge began, and closer to home, the boys from the Hilltop are back on the court.

I think the Hoyas were a little nervous at the start, perhaps because emotions were running high after last year’s game. But come the second half, Georgetown settled down and pulled away, using an 11-1 run to start the half and put the result beyond doubt. The young guys got a lot of minutes and did more than hold their own. With Freeman, Wright, and Macklin on the floor, it is a very different look than with Sapp, Wallace, and Hibbert. If the underclassmen can continue to get good minutes, the Hoyas will cause opposing defenses lots of problems. My only complaint with the team’s performance is the free throws. 65% is not going to cut it once Big East play rolls around, so the Hoyas need to right that ship, the sooner the better.

The Hoyas had a great game last night, showing why they are the #5 team in the country by playing with poise and simply executing, particularly in the second half.

The main thing that stuck out for me, though, was the team’s passing. Georgetown made several crisp passes that demanded that the players knew where each other were going to be. This not only shows that the Hoyas are getting more comfortable with the offense, but they are also getting more comfortable with each other.

The 18-point final margin of victory was a little bit misleading in Georgetown’s recent win at Old Dominion. The Hoyas had everything under control for most of the second half, but there was a pivotal stretch where the Monarchs were threatening to give Georgetown a very tough test. The critical plays aren’t always made in crunch time.
