The Georgetown Hoyas lost their first game of the season 90-78 to the Tennessee Volunteers in the semifinal of the Old Spice Classic. Cameron Tatum scored 14 points in the second half including four three-pointers down the stretch as Tennessee closed the game on a 35-15 run. Chris Wright had a team high 18 points, leading four Hoyas in double figures.
It was an energetic game from the start with both teams going on extended runs. The Hoyas led by eight points early on, and then trailed by seven near halftime. Tennessee led 39-37 at the break.
Georgetown began the second half with a surge spurred on by a pair of three-pointers from sophomore Omar Wattad. The Hoyas opened a eight point lead before Tennessee began crashing the offensive boards. Rebounding gave the Volunteers extra opportunities to score, most notably a series on which they grabbed two offensive rebounds off missed free throws. That sequence turned into a 6-point possession to erase the Hoyas small margin of error. Georgetown also had trouble executing down the stretch, committing two key turnovers in the final minutes.
The Hoyas will take the court again on Sunday afternoon in the tournament’s third place game, taking on the Maryland Terrapins at 5:30 PM. The game will televised on ESPN2.
