The Georgetown Hoyas showed no signs of rust after six days off, easily defeating the American Eagles 73-49 this afternoon at Verizon Center. Sophomore Chris Wright scored a career-high 22 points – 11 in each half – to lead all scorers. Jessie Sapp scored his season-high 14 points and DaJuan Summers also added 14.

Georgetown began by scoring the first 13 points of the game and American didn’t manage a point until after five minutes of play. The Hoyas defense was solid as usual, holding the Eagles to 20% shooting in the first half. At halftime, the Hoyas led 40-12; American only managed 49 points in the entire game. For the second straight game, the Hoyas focused their defensive efforts on the opponents’ top scorer. In their last game vs. Maryland, the Hoyas held Greivis Vazquez to only two points, 18 below his average. For American, Garrison Carr entered the game averaging 19 points per game, but today he was held to nine (2-17 FG, 1-11 3PT). Chris Wright and Jessie Sapp were responsible for most of the one-on-one defending against Carr, but the entire team was keyed on shutting down the Eagles’ top scoring threat.

After the week-long respite, the Hoyas will be back at home on Monday evening to face Savannah State, coached by former Georgetown Hoya and member of the 1984 National Championship team Horace Broadnax. Game time is 7:30 PM.
