The 37th Annual Capital Classic took place at American University’s Bender Arena last night. For nearly four decades, this High-School All-Star game has included some of the best local players from the D.C. Metro Area as well as some of the greatest players that have ever played basketball.
In the most recent edition, the Capital All-Stars defeated the U.S. All-Stars 117-108. Markel Starks, who will be playing for Georgetown in the fall, was named the game’s most valuable player.
Today, Georgetown announced that it has named Lee Reed as the new Director of Athletics.
Reed arrives at the hilltop after being Cleveland State University’s A.D. since 2002. He replaces Daniel R. Porterfield, Ph.D. who served as the interim director of athletics this past season.
From the press release:
“Lee is committed to educational excellence and competitive success and I am confident that with his leadership we will continue to recruit and support first-rate coaches and student-athletes who maintain the University’s tradition of academic and athletic success,” Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia said. “This has been a thorough search process and we look forward to the contributions he will make to our athletics program and the lives of our student-athletes.”
Mark D won Hoya Hoops’ inaugural NCAA Pick 8 with his selection of Duke, West Virginia, Baylor, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Marquette, Richmond, and Gonzaga. Those teams went 19-7 for a 73.1% winning percentage, earning Mark the coveted Hoya Hoops T-shirt as well as the eternal glory that comes with winning the first Pick 8.
GKiely, big A, lin, Will F, Drew, and LCPolo18 all tied for second place with 63.6% as all of those participants picked 14 wins but no National Champion.
So congratulations Mark D, and like we asked Zo the Pregame Predictions champion, please contact us at hoyahoops@hoyahoops.com so we can get your contact info and shirt size to send you your prize.

Both Georgetown and the University of Maryland were competing for the 6-9 center/power forward, who chose Georgetown shortly after a conversation with both father and son Coach Thompson’s. Abraham now joins Nate Lubick, Markel Starks, and Aaron Bowen in the Hoyas’ class of 2014.
Georgetown:
Ever since the arrival of Coach John Thompson III, the media has focused on Georgetown’s version of the Princeton Offense. In this one, it was Georgetown’s defense that stuck out as the Hoyas were incapable of stopping hot three-point shooting by an Ohio side playing the game of their lives.
Not being able to beat the Bobcats’ screens to defend the outside shot and not securing defensive rebounds allowed Ohio to score more points on Georgetown than any other team in a regulation postseason game.
The Georgetown Hoyas fell in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, losing to the Ohio Bobcats 83-97. It was the first time that Georgetown has lost in their first game of the tournament since 1997 when the Hoyas were defeated by UNC-Charlotte.
Meanwhile, in their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1993, the Lady Hoyas defeated Marist in their opening round game. They advance to the Round of 32 where they will meet Baylor tonight at 10:05pm.
In the 2010 NCAA Pick 8, a lot of people are struggling due to Georgetown and Kansas’ early exits, but here are the leaders: lin and Will F are sharing the top spot with a record of 11-3 and GKiely is right behind them with this teams going 10-3 so far.
