Missouri in the Record Books

By Johnny

Georgetown came back from behind to beat the #9 Missouri Tigers in overtime last night, pushing their record to 7-0. But besides getting their first win against a ranked opponent, here are some other interesting facts that should cement the game into Hoya History.

  • Austin Freeman, Jason Clark, and Chris Wright all reached the 20 point mark. This is only the second time under John Thompson III’s tenure that three players have scored 20 or more, the last being last year’s Duke game when it was Austin, Chris, and Greg Monroe scoring 20. The time before that was a Mike Sweetney, Kevin Braswell, and Wesley Wilson showing against Howard in ’01.
  • Austin Freeman scored 31 points after scoring 32 against UNC Asheville. Last year, we showed you a list of 30-point performances up through the Harvard game, and it looks like we’ll have to update that list soon.

Iverson vs Villanova, 1996Under Coach Thompson, there have been five games where a player has gone for 30, and now Austin is responsible for three of them.

The last time a Hoya had back-to-back 30-point games was in February of 2003 when Mike Sweetney put up 38 in a double-overtime loss to Notre Dame and followed that up with 32 two days later against Syracuse.

If you’re looking for the last time a Hoya put up 30 in back-to-back wins, you have to go all the way back to Allen Iverson‘s 37 against Villanova in the 1996 season finale and 38 against Miami in the Big East Tournament.

  • Chris Wright earned his second career double-double dishing out 10 assists to go with his 21 points. He earned his first in Charleston when he had a career-high 12 assists against Coastal Carolina. Chris is averaging over seven assists a game so far this season.
  • Jason Clark came up big in overtime scoring nine points on 3-3 from 3. That’s the most points any Hoya has scored in overtime under Coach Thompson III’s reign. The next best was DaJuan Summers with 8 against North Carolina in the East Regional Championship. Brandon Bowman also scored 8 in the overtime win against Norfolk State in Coach Thompson’s first season.
  • The Hoyas went 18 for 18 from the free throw line on the night, which is the best in Georgetown’s recorded history – at least according to our friends at The Georgetown Basketball History Project. They go back to 1978 with free throw percentage stats, and the best on that list was 12-12 against American in December of 78.

Edit: The Georgetown Media Guide confirms that 12-12 against American was the record.

  • The Hoyas scored 111 points, which is the most under JTIII. The next best offensive performance was 110 against Radford at McDonough, the last victory for Georgetown at the on-campus arena.

Hoyas in the League and Around the World

By Johnny

Turkey Allen IversonThe season officially gets underway on Friday, but before that happens, I figured I’d let you in on what’s going on with the Hoyas who’ve taken their basketball skills beyond the hilltop.

Yesterday, we got you updated with all the Hoyas on Twitter, and today, I’ll be giving you recent updates on Georgetown players in the NBA and beyond.

30-Point Games

By Tony

Chris Wright scored 34 Points in Georgetown’s recent win against Harvard. The performance earned him a spot on the Big East Weekly Honor Roll, and here are some interesting stats about the 30-point game:

  • Wright’s point total was the highest scored by a player in a game under head coach John Thompson III.
  • It was only the second time since JTIII became the head coach that a player for the Hoyas has scored 30 or more – Jeff Green scored 30 points in the 2007 Big East Semifinal win over Notre Dame.
  • The 34-point performance is the highest by any Hoya since February 7, 2004 when Gerald Riley put up 37 at home against Miami.

Since 30-point games have been such a rare occurrence lately for the Hoyas, we thought it would be a nice time to look back at the most recent 30-point games. Instead of going back all the way back through the entire history of the Hoyas, we decided to begin with the 1994-95 season. That was the year that Allen Iverson was a freshman.

Sweetney and Bowman Cut

By Hoya Hoops

Bad news for Hoyas trying to make it into the League:

  • Brandon Bowman was waived from the Philadelphia 76ers yesterday after playing with them throughout the NBA Training Camp.
    [Sixers.com]
  • Also, Mike Sweetney did not make the final cut for the Boston Celtics despite greatly impressing coach Doc Rivers.

According to the Celtics Blog at Boston.com, there are rumors that Rivers might keep Sweetney around so that he can workout with the team to help get back into shape.

Hoyas Gewinnen Bundesliga

By Johnny

At the beginning of last week, I mentioned that at least one Hoya would win a championship by the end of the month. And sure enough, Jonathan Wallace and Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje won the Basketball Bundesliga championship, edging out Brandon Bowman’s Telekom Baskets Bonn in the decisive Game 5.

Hoyas and Championships

By Johnny

I woke up this morning thinking to myself, “Now that the Lakers have won the NBA Championship – and Patrick Ewing and the Magic have not – it looks like no Hoya will end up a league champion this year.”

Then I thought, “Wait a second, that’s not true. There’s still the European leagues.” And sure enough, GUHoyas posted yesterday that no less than three Georgetown players would be competing in the German Basketball Bundesliga’s championship game last night.

Dikembe and German Updates

By Johnny

Not much news going on in Hoyaland right now, so this is what we’ve got for you.

  • Dikembe Mutombo logged the most minutes of the season on Friday when he played 35 minutes at Golden State. The Rockets won 113-109 and Deke had 10 points, 15 rebounds and 4 blocks.
  • In Germany, Jonathan Wallace and Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje’s EWE Baskets Oldenburg beat Giants Düsseldorf 98-96 and Brandon Bowman’s Telekom Baskets Bonn beat Giants Nördlingen 67-65. Our German’s not too good, but it doesn’t look like any of the Hoyas hit a last second shot.

Bowman to Bonn

By Hoya Hoops

So just after posting a piece about Jonathan Wallace and Tyler Crawford playing in Slovenia, we get an email from David Volkmann from Telekom Baskets Bonn. Apparently, the German league’s reigning co-champions has recently signed Brandon Bowman to a one year contract.

David provided us with this press release, the 2008-09 roster, and a photo of BoBo and his new coach and center Tim Clifford.

He also informed us that Brandon rolled his ankle on his first layup attempt with his new side, but it wasn’t too bad.

NCAA, NBA, and Legadue

By Hoya Hoops
  • Georgetown opened their Big East portion of the season with a 12 point win over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Austin Freeman paced the Hoyas with 13 points, and Jonathan Wallace added 11.
  • Jeff Green returned to the Verizon Center to play his first game as a pro at the court he called home for three years. The Sonics fell to the Wizards 108-86.
  • Allen Iverson also had an emotional game as the Nuggets hosted AI’s former team, the Philadelphia 76ers. Iverson scored 38 points on 56% shooting and dished out 8 assists to lead the Nuggets to a 109-96 victory.
  • Brandon Bowman, class of 2006, left the Bakersfield Jam of the NBA’s Development League to join the Italian club Ignis Novara, located in the Piedmont region. In his first game yesterday, Brandon scored 21 points, shooting 60% from the field. Bowman will play for the Second Division Dragons for the remainder of the season.
  • #1 North Carolina eked out an overtime victory in their ACC opener to remain perfect on the season and in doing so handed Clemson its first loss of the year. Clemson led by one with 5 seconds remaining in overtime, when Ty Lawson found Wayne Ellington beyond the three point arc. Ellington buried the jumper with .4 seconds remaining and sealed the victory.
