Mike’s Villanova Postgame Thoughts

By Mike

Teams

Georgetown:
When Georgetown and Villanova play each other, you can expect an ugly, hard-fought game, and this one was no exception. The Hoyas committed a whopping 25 turnovers but somehow still managed to pull out a victory. That can be attributed to toughness. A criticism of these Hoyas has been their lack of fight. Against the Wildcats, the Hoyas gave it there all for 40 minutes, keeping up the defensive pressure and fighting for every loose ball. They now have a win over a bitter rival to show for it.

DaJuan Enters the 1,000 Point Club

By Hoya Hoops

In the midst of all the recent Georgetown Basketball turmoil, there is one bit if good news which went pretty much unnoticed. In the loss at Marquette, DaJuan Summers scored his 1,000th point, becoming the 40th player in Georgetown Basketball history to accomplish that feat. The accomplishment is far less significant than the current state of the Hoyas, but it is a nice accomplishment, especially for a junior. We caught up with DaJuan and Coach Thompson last week to get their thoughts on this milestone.

Mike’s Marquette Postgame Thoughts

By Mike

Teams

Georgetown:
Georgetown played a very good first half. They were making their shots, and it seemed as though the team’s confidence was high. However, in the second half, the Hoyas regressed to its form of the last few games. They fell behind and seemed to lose their nerve, no one wanted to take the big shot, and as a result, they couldn’t keep up the scoring pace with Marquette.

Mike’s Duke Postgame Thoughts

By Mike

Teams

Georgetown:
Georgetown had a difficult task posed towards them. They had to go down in the middle of the Big East season and take on a perennial powerhouse on their home court. The Hoyas responded well, even after falling behind by 15 points early in the second half. However, Greg Monroe was hampered by foul trouble which limited his minutes, and as a result the Georgetown offense was not as fluid. In the end, the Hoyas could not get over the hump.

Powerful, Colossal, Intimidating

By Tony

For Hoya fans, there was a lot to enjoy in the 88-74 victory over Syracuse: Monroe’s complete performance, Freeman’s hot shooting, the bench performance in general, Clark and Mescheriakov specifically, Syracuse’s futility – you name it. My favorite part, however, was DaJuan Summers. Not his game-high 21 points and not the second half three-pointers he made to keep the Orange at bay. My favorite play was his steal, dunk, plus the intentional foul, and his technical foul.

Mike’s Pittsburgh Postgame Thoughts

By Mike

Teams

Georgetown:
The Hoyas suffered their first conference loss of the season for two big reasons: they did not rebound, and they did not shoot the ball well. The Hoyas were outrebounded 48-23, a whopping 2-to-1 margin, and, excluding Summers, the team was 2-15 from beyond the arc. That makes it very difficult to win games, especially against a team as tough and focused as Pittsburgh.

Memorable Home Wins

By Hoya Hoops

We’ve been talking a lot lately about the Hoyas’ home winning streak, and how at last the Hoyas have a real home court advantage. After the impressive win against UCONN on Monday, it’s time to turn our attention back home, as the Hoyas face Pitt on Saturday at the Verizon Center. We’re hoping Georgetown can keep the streak alive against the Panthers, and we’ve also put together a small list of the best moments so far.

My Bad, DaJuan

By Tony

We here at HoyaHoops.com call ourselves “the most comprehensive Georgetown Basketball website.” In order to stay true to our claim, we have to make sure we remain straightforward and honest. If you are a loyal reader of our site, you know that we post new content every single day from the middle of October through April. Unfortunately this is where the ‘we’ becomes ‘I’. I wrote an article just before the season began which dealt with the three-point line being moved a foot farther away from the basket. You can read the article if you missed it, but let me give you the relevant information.

Mike’s American Postgame Thoughts

By Mike

Teams

Georgetown:
The Hoyas started the game flying, playing suffocating defense, hitting their three-pointers, and getting cuts and layups inside. By the time Jeff Jones called his first timeout with just under five minutes played, Georgetown was up 13-0 and the game was already out of reach. Georgetown could have stopped scoring right there, and they still would have been winning at halftime. However, the Hoyas did lose focus in the second half, and both their offensive efficiency and defensive prowess was noticeably worse. Fortunately their halftime lead was nigh insurmountable.

Mike’s Post-Tournament Thoughts

By Mike

Teams

Georgetown:
The Hoyas grew a lot over the course of this tournament. In the Wichita State game, the team looked a little flat, perhaps they felt a little like Allen Iverson, upset about having to work on Thanksgiving. The team did well closing out that game though, and showed character by not getting anxious despite the closeness of the game.

Georgetown came out ready to play against Tennessee, and for more than 3/4 of the game held their own. Unfortunately, the offense stalled near the end of the game, and their defense did not bail them out when they needed stops. Poor rebounding also hurt the Hoyas, and the Volunteers punished them for it, cutting an eight point Georgetown lead down to two on one possession via offensive boards.

But, the Hoyas had no trouble bouncing back against a mediocre Maryland side, leaving no doubt which is the premiere team in the DC area. The Hoyas ran the offense to perfection against the Terps’ man-to-man defense, and the game was over by halftime. Georgetown also did well not to turn the ball over too much against Maryland’s full-court pressure, a problem that often plagues the Hoyas. And, although it does not mean all problems have been resolved, the Hoyas did outrebound the Terps 39-26.
