Mike’s Cincinnati Postgame Thoughts

Teams

Georgetown:
After winning 11 games in a row over the span of a month and a half, the Hoyas have now lost two games in three days. Both defeats can be attributed to uninspired defense and poor offensive execution, especially down the stretch. That was painfully clear in this game, as the Hoyas made just one field goal in the final six and a half minutes of the game, letting a six point lead evaporate and losing to Cincinnati 68-64.

In the team’s defense, expectations got inflated after Georgetown’s winning streak, and this young team is not legitimately a top 10 team yet. However, that being said, this game was certainly winnable, and the Hoyas have only themselves to blame for letting this win slip away.

Self-Inflicted

By Over the Hilltop

Georgetown shot itself in the feet over, and over, and over again Monday, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory en route to a 68-64 loss to Cincinnati. The loss was more vexing than most, as it was caused almost entirely by the Hoyas’ own mental mistakes.

Mike’s West Virginia Postgame Thoughts

By Mike

Teams

Georgetown:
The Hoyas suffered their first conference loss of the year at the hands of West Virginia, 74-62. Three point shooting was particularly bad for the Hoyas on the day, as the team made just one three in the first 39 minutes of play. The poor outside shooting allowed the Mountaineers to pack it in defensively, making Georgetown’s offense difficult to run. Also, the Hoyas did not play it’s best defense, allowing the Mountaineers to shoot 50% on the day.

One of the bright spots of this game was Georgetown’s press, which continues to impress me. In recent history, Georgetown has used the press more to slow down the opposition, but this year’s Hoyas have used it effectively to spark the offense, creating turnover and quick baskets. In this game the press got Georgetown back in the game, helping to cut the lead to four with under 2:30 to play. Unfortunately, the Hoyas were not able to get any closer.

The Big Three vs. Marquette

By Tony

The Georgetown Hoyas are a balanced team. They have a very talented freshman class. They have solid role players who can provide big lifts in key moments. Most importantly however, the Hoyas have a Big Three. There are three main Hoyas who need to carry the load when the game is on the line. Period.

Comeback

By Over the Hilltop

Georgetown repeatedly fought back from the ropes against Marquette Wednesday, coming back from as much as 17 points down to escape with a thrilling, last-minute, 73-70 victory. The Hoyas’ eleventh straight win seemed not just in doubt but out of the question for much of the game, as Marquette built a large lead that Georgetown couldn’t winnow to single digits, let alone fully erase. But then both offense and defense clicked, and Georgetown closed the game on a dominant run, fueled by veterans on offense and youth on defense. In the end, the box score reflects the veteran scoring: Jason Clark led all scorers with 26, Thompson poured in 16 included the last-minute, game-winning 3, and Sims had a stat-stuffing 13 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.

Double Up

By Over the Hilltop

Georgetown put a bow on its nearly perfect non-conference slate Thursday night, building a twenty-point lead before withstanding a late Memphis run to prevail 70-59. Jason Clark scored 18 points to lead four Hoyas in double figures, while also grabbing five rebounds and swiping five steals. The win wasn’t the prettiest of the season: the Hoyas didn’t shoot well, making just 43 percent of its shots from the floor, and was uncharacteristically careless with the ball, committing fifteen turnovers. But, much like its win over this same Memphis team in Maui one month ago, Georgetown won in spite of its imperfections.

So what led to the victory? Let’s dig deeper:
