As a youngster, I wrote a fan letter to Reggie Williams during his senior season. I told him I was a big fan of his, and he was my favorite player, and I went to all the games. Then I asked him to please write me back. I don’t know if he ever got it, but he didn’t write me back. Anyway, I hope if he did ever read the letter that maybe it brightened up his day. I wonder if this season, anybody has written a letter to Jessie Sapp. It’s his final home game tomorrow, and I envisioned a fan letter to look something like this. More »
Georgetown:
The Hoyas had their first dominant performance in over a month, dismantling South Florida offensively and shutting them down defensively. The loss to Syracuse may have reminded the Hoyas that they are a very good team, and though they can’t win every game, they should soundly beat inferior opponents. And Georgetown did just that in Tampa. More »
“We need this guy over my left shoulder to be Jessie Sapp.” That’s what Coach Thompson said when asked about Jessie Sapp’s performance vs. Rutgers. Jessie’s numbers weren’t overwhelming; they never are. But just like what people expect from Jessie Sapp, the value of the contributions is much more significant than the numbers on a stat sheet. Georgetown:
Georgetown finally got off the schneid, winning for the first time in six games. It wasn’t the prettiest of games, but the team did enough to get the job done. They again had a slow start, but fought through it to take a nine point lead into the break. Georgetown then took over for the first part of the second half, extending the lead to 20. From then on, the Hoyas simply coasted, and perhaps let Rutgers get too close. But, for a team that had not had that leisure for most of last month, I think I can forgive them this once, as it was good to see Georgetown finally get a win. More »
Georgetown:
The Hoyas followed a lackluster performance against West Virginia with an equally uninspired performance against Seton Hall. The team was again frigid from beyond the arc, shooting 3-22, and were it not for shooting an impressive 85% from the free throw stripe, Georgetown would not have been in this game down the stretch. Georgetown:
The Hoyas came out flat, showed little life in the middle, and ended worse. By far the worst performance of the season for Georgetown couldn’t have come at a worse time. Back-to-back losses just before a three game road trip with conference implications getting bigger and bigger. Georgetown struggled in every category from shooting to rebounding to keeping possession. Hopefully the Hoyas can use that short memory you have to develop in the Big East and forget about this game in a hurry. More »
After all of the games that we attend, Johnny dutifully records audio from the postgame press conferences. Until now, we haven’t done much with them except for occasionally looking for a good quote missed by the other beat writers. We’ve decided to change that, and so from now on, we’re going to share that audio with you. Below, you’ll find a YouTube video with the contents of the Georgetown press conference following the Maryland game in the Old Spice Classic. Enjoy.
Recently we’ve taken a look at some great seniors of Georgetown History who have made incredible impacts as the lone seniors. Now, we’ll take a look at what this season could mean for Jessie Sapp. We at Hoya Hoops have the utmost respect for all the Hoya players past and present, and that includes Bryon Jansen. But if Bryon makes significant contributions on the court for the Hoyas, it won’t be good for the team since it means that other players have gotten injured. For the purposes of our analysis here, we mean Sapp doesn’t have any seniors to help him on the floor, we in no way trivialize Jansen’s importance to the team.
We’ve talked about the senior seasons of Reggie Williams and Kevin Braswell. This season, Jessie Sapp has an opportunity to join that elite company with regard to showing leadership as the team’s only senior. His numbers will pale in comparison to Kevin Braswell’s, and his overall greatness will not be at the same level as Reggie Williams, but Jessie can still leave a lasting legacy on Georgetown Basketball. There is no denying the void that has been left by the departed senior class of 2008. It will feel very strange for all Hoya fans to hear the starting line-ups announced on November 19 at Verizon Center and not hear Jonathan Wallace’s name. But this is the reality of college basketball, and while it is sad and difficult at times to move on, there is also a great opportunity for new players to accept the responsibility of making up for what the departed players left behind.
