Ten Years in Ten Days: 2001-02

By Hoya Hoops

2001-02 – Record: 8-5 (Conference 4-4)
Senior Class: Kevin Braswell

Georgetown was trying to build on their Sweet Sixteen appearance from one year earlier but had a lot of trouble with consistency. The Hoyas had a great game at home against Syracuse, beating the Orange by 15 – the most ever at the Verizon Center – but there will always be a dark cloud over this season. 2001-02 was the only season in the modern era that the Hoyas were cheated out of an NCAA Tournament berth. They were flat out gypped.

In Kevin Braswell’s senior season, the team had a number of close losses that they should have won, but when the NCAA Tournament field included Boston College, a Big East team with a worse conference record than Georgetown, whom the Hoyas had beaten on the road by 27 points, you can be sure that something was wrong with the selection committee’s judgment. It was a real shame that one of the greatest guards in Hoya History only got to appear in one NCAA Tournament.

Mike’s 25 on the 25th

By Hoya Hoops

Happy Birthday Mike Sweetney!

We’ve already talked about the current situation in which Big Mike finds himself and about his impressive numbers as a Hoya. Let’s hope his birthday cake comes with a new NBA contract…Make a Wish, Big Fella!

How Sweet It Was

By Tony

We already talked about Mike Sweetney’s current situation in the NBA. Now we’re going to look back at his time spent with the Blue and Gray. His first game as a Hoya was on November 17, 2000 against Bethune Cookman at McDonough Gymnasium. Late in the first half, Mike was posting up just outside the lane near the block. He used a quick spin move around the defender and elevated to the front of the rim for a two-handed slam. The last Hoya big man I’d seen make a move like that was Alonzo Mourning. In that first half with Georgetown, Sweetney played 15 minutes and scored 15 points on 7-9 shooting. True, it was against an inferior opponent, but that was just the start of his remarkable career.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

By Tony

When the NBA season ended for the Chicago Bulls last spring, Mike Sweetney became a restricted free agent. Any team in the league could try to sign Sweetney, but the Bulls had the right to match any offer to keep him in Chicago. Unfortunately for Big Mike, there hasn’t been much interest from any teams, and with opening day about two weeks away, Sweetney is still without an NBA team. There is still time for Mike to be in uniform for opening day somewhere in the NBA (it seems like the Phoenix Suns have had the most interest), but it’s almost a tragedy how far Sweetney’s NBA stock has fallen since he left Georgetown in the summer of 2003.
