Coach Thompson at Midnight Madness

  • As well as introducing the 2011-12 Men’s Basketball team, Midnight Madness 2011 was also the unveiling of Patrick Ewing, Jr.‘s NBA jersey on the back wall at McDonough.
  • Patrick Ewing, Jr. wasn’t the only Hoya Legend in attendance, as he was joined by over 20 other Hoya alums, including John Duren, Gene Smith, Patrick Ewing, Reggie Williams, Mark Tillmon, Othella Harrington, Jerome Williams, Anthony Perry, Nathaniel Burton, Jeff Green, Roy Hibbert, Tyler Crawford, and Greg Monroe.

  • Pat also participated in the dunk contest, but he came in 2nd place to freshman Jabril Trawick according to judges Jerome Williams and former teammates Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert.

    Here are two of Jabril’s dunks from Friday night:

  • As in years past, the Hoyas celebrated the first official day of the new season by dancing into the arena. After being individually introduced, the 2011-12 squad showed off their teamwork and their dance moves as they party rocked to LMFAO’s Party Rock Anthem.

The last time the two teams met was in 2007 when Georgetown won 70-60 in that year's interconference challenge.
  • Recent transfer Vee Sanford has announced where he will be playing basketball next season, as he's committed to the University of Dayton. We at Hoya Hoops wish Vee the best as a Flyer, but we are a little upset with his decision, as it messes up our limerick. There once was a Hoya Vee Sanford But after two seasons he transferred. Had a great hi-top fade, In games, seldom played. And next year, he's playing at Stanford Dayton.
  • Tomorrow is Commencement Day for the class of 2011, so we wanted to congratulate seniors Austin Freeman, Chris Wright, Julian Vaughn, and Ryan Dougherty as well as managers C.J.   • Presidents Day Weekend was not kind to the Top 5 teams in the country, as #3 Texas lost to Nebraska on Saturday, #4 Pittsburgh fell to St. John's on Saturday, and #2 Ohio State lost to Purdue on Sunday. Add to that #1 Kansas' loss to Kansas State last Monday, and it wasn't pretty for the top of the heap. That's why #5 Duke moved up to the top spot with the new rankings yesterday.
  • #9 Georgetown survived the weekend, holding off South Florida on Saturday for a 61-55 victory.
  • It was All-Star Weekend in the NBA, and Greg Monroe had a good game for the Rookies in the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge, helping his side beat the Sophomores 148-140. Greg scored 14 points, grabbed 8 boards, and got this nice writeup from the Detroit News.
  • The NBA Development League also had its All-Star game this weekend, and Patrick Ewing, Jr. helped the East earn a 115-108 victory on Saturday night. Check out the highlights to see Pat's two big rejections (including the Block of the Night) and his reverse alley-oop.

  • Roy Hibbert scored 20 points for the first time since November, but followed up that performance against the Nets with a 2 point showing against Chicago . Expect big changes for the Pacers, though, as coach Jim O'Brien was fired and replaced with interim coach Frank Vogel.
  • Greg Monroe is continuing to do well with the Pistons as he scored 15 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds in a loss against the Knicks yesterday. DaJuan Summers played 12 minutes in that and scored four points.
  • In the NBA Development League, Patrick Ewing, Jr. was traded from the Reno Big Horns to the Sioux Falls Skyforce on Tuesday. In his first games with the Skyforce, he scored 13 and grabbed 15 boards and then followed that up with a team leading 14 points in two losses to the Dakota Wizards.

  • Greg Monroe earned his first NBA start in a loss at the Minnesota Timberwolves. He managed to score 8 points and pick up 15 boards for the Pistons.
  • Patrick Ewing, Jr. keeps lighting it up for the Reno Bighorns. This weekend, he earned his first professional triple-double scoring 26 points along with 10 rebounds and 11 assists on Friday and then following up that performance with 24 points, 8 rebounds and 5 blocks on Saturday.

Hibbert was tough to contain until Green switched to cover his old teammate in the 4th quarter and overtime.
  • In Turkey, Allen Iverson earned his first victory in Europe with a 94-85 win over Trabzonspor. Allen scored 14 points, dished out 8 assists, and collected a steal in the W.

  • The Georgetown Hoyas won the third annuals Charleston Classic this weekend, defeating Coastal Carolina on Thursday, Wofford on Friday, and NC State last night. Chris Wright was named the tournament MVP and Jason Clark was also named to the All-Tournament team. The Hoyas are now 5-0 on the season and have a short Thanksgiving break, not playing again until Saturday when they take on UNC-Asheville at home.
  • In the NBA, Jeff Green is still out with his ankle injury. He has missed seven out of the last eight games for the Thunder and is listed as day-to-day for tonight's game against the Timberwolves.
  • Over in Europe, Allen Iverson played his first game in the Turkish league, losing 74-67 to Fenerbahçe Ülker. AI only managed two points and is now 0-2 in play in Turkey. Earlier in the week, he played in the Eurocup, as Beşiktaş lost to KK Hemofarm Stada.
  • The NBA D-League got underway this weekend, and Patrick Ewing, Jr. is indeed playing with the Reno Bighorns. They won their first two games -both against the Utah Flash - and Patrick led the team last night with 28 points to go with his 11 boards and 6 assists.
  • The #10 Florida Gators were the first team ranked in the Top 10 to lose a game, falling to #5 Ohio State on Tuesday. The first Top 10 upsets, though, took place in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off where #8 North Carolina dropped two games, falling to Minnesota on Friday, and then losing to Vanderbilt in the 3rd place game. The Tar Heels' next opponent - like the Hoyas - is UNC-Asheville.
