25 Years Ago This Evening

By Tony

It was a Monday night in April of 1984. Two of the premier big men in the world of college basketball were going head to head for the National Championship. It was the first time that Patrick Ewing and Hakeem Olajuwon met on the court, starting a rivalry that would continue for over a decade into the NBA.

The Last Thing You Should Know

By Hoya Hoops

We’ve been going over some facts about the 1984 National Championship team that every Hoya fan should know. In preparation for tomorrow afternoon’s celebration honoring that team, we’ve already told you about Coach JT2, the 3 Championships, the SMU game that was Too Close for Comfort, and the semifinal which proved Defense Wins Championships. We promised you five things, and here is the last one.

Player of the Game

In 1984 Patrick Ewing was the most imposing player in the country, the best defender in the country, and the best player on the Hoyas. However, Ewing did not lead Georgetown in scoring in the National Championship game. On that Monday night 25 years ago, it was freshman Reggie Williams who poured in 19 points on 9-18 from the field (no 3-pt line in 1984) and collected seven rebounds. Reggie cemented his place in NCAA history, and he foreshadowed his remarkable success at Georgetown. Reggie Williams remains the third all-time leading scorer in Georgetown Basketball history, behind only Eric “Sleepy” Floyd and Patrick Ewing.

Georgetown at Syracuse

By Hoya Hoops

There hasn’t been a Georgetown-Syracuse game played in the Carrier Dome with the stakes this high for a long time. It is possible that this meeting has the most riding on it of all the regular season games ever played at the Carrier Dome in this rivalry. A loss for either team could easily result in an NIT appearance. Both teams will be desperate to avoid such a fate. With that in mind, let’s take a look back at some of the more memorable Georgetown-Syracuse games played at Syracuse. If you have any memories of games that didn’t make our list, feel free to leave us a comment.

Reggie Williams – 1986-87

By Tony

“I played with Alonzo and Dikembe, but I never saw anybody do the things that Reggie did.” – Mark Tillmon (GU Class of 1990)

Last week, I talked about Jessie Sapp being the only senior leader on the current Georgetown roster. Twenty-two years ago, one of the greatest Hoyas of all time was in a similar position.

Mike’s Seton Hall Postgame Thoughts

By Mike

Teams

Georgetown:
The Hoyas showed what it takes to win down the stretch, turning a five point game with under seven minutes left into an eighteen point blow-out five minutes later, led in large part by a strong performance from Patrick Ewing Jr. The only glaring problem with Georgetown’s play on Saturday was the season high 21 turnovers. The Hoyas have a history of struggling against full-court pressure, and although they limited the turnovers in the second half, two more came off the press near the end of the game. Had it been an eight point game instead of 18, I hope the Hoyas would have been a bit more careful with the ball.
