Alright, folks. Now that the basketball season is underway, it’s time to renew our Friday frivolity, Game Time. As you probably know, today is Halloween, so we thought we should ask an appropriate question:
What Halloween candy reminds you of a Hoya – past or present – and why?
For us, we think that Sugar Daddies remind us of Gene Smith. Just like the candy, he’d stick to anybody. What Halloween candy gets you thinking about the Hoyas? Post you answers in the comments.

In the NBA season openers for three former Hoyas, the results were not very good last night. Allen Iverson, Jeff Green, and Roy Hibbert each lost their first game of the new season. Hoya Hoops gives you a quick rundown of how the former Georgetown stars fared in their opening contests.

I’ve been talking about senior leaders lately, and another player who was alone in his leadership role – like Reggie Williams before him and soon to be Jessie Sapp after him – was Kevin Braswell.
Kevin Braswell was the last class that came to Georgetown to play for John Thompson. Braswell had barely started his freshman season when Coach Thompson resigned in January of 1999. His career was in some ways overshadowed by the team’s struggles during his time as a Hoya, but Braswell remains one of the all-time Hoya greats. Because of the circumstances when he played for Georgetown, he didn’t have the luxury of learning to be a point guard from other older great point guard teammates. Braswell was forced to learn on the job. But even with the important role he played throughout his career from day one, his senior season was far and away his best.

Here’s a little round up of what’s been said and posted about Roy around the internet the past couple days:
- Luke Byrnes from HoopsWorld.com is asking if Roy will be able to become an impact player.
- Jeff Rabjohns from IndyStar.com talks about Hibbert’s great mentors from Georgetown and the tradition of excellent big men.
- And both the Hoya’s new blog and the Voice’s blog are showing a video of Roy at the Pacers’ Fan Jam.
Hopefully Roy will be making many more headlines once the NBA season begins.

Yesterday, Patrick Ewing Jr. was waived from the New York Knicks as they were forced to cut one player to finalize their 15-man roster. Despite being a fan favorite and putting up an impressive last showing in his preseason appearance on Friday, Patrick will have to continue with his search for a permanent team.
Check out this article from the NY Times to read some nice quotes from Pat or check out his fourth quarter slam which earned Dunk of the Night honors on NBA.com

“I played with Alonzo and Dikembe, but I never saw anybody do the things that Reggie did.” – Mark Tillmon (GU Class of 1990)
Last week, I talked about Jessie Sapp being the only senior leader on the current Georgetown roster. Twenty-two years ago, one of the greatest Hoyas of all time was in a similar position.

- Cincinnati freshman Cashmere Wright will miss the entire season with a torn ACL suffered in practice. Wright was a highly-touted point guard who was expected to play a major part in the Bearcats’ team this season.
- Arizona’s coach of 25 years, Lute Olson retired this past week after missing last season for personal reasons. The University of Arizona has named Russ Pennell as the interim head coach, after associate head coach Mike Dunlap turned down an offer.
- Today is Jaren Jackson’s birthday. Jaren is currently the head coach of the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in the NBA Development League.

Last year, when the Denver Nuggets came to D.C., I was at the Verizon Center to interview Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony about the upcoming Big East season. Allen wasn’t in the greatest mood, and being a little timid from my first time in an NBA locker room, I didn’t get a chance to talk with him. I eventually caught up with Carmelo and got a couple of quotes for Tony’s preseason article. (To tell you the truth, I was so hesitant, I actually walked out with Carmelo because I waited until I was the last guy from the media in the locker room and then I had to hurry through my questions so he could leave.)

Tony mentioned the other day the harsh reality of a player’s tenure in college. He only has four years to make his mark and then must move on. It can be a bitter pill to swallow, especially for fans of both college and professional basketball, who see in the NBA the same core of players return year after year, with an opportunity to build off of the previous season. To put it all in perspective, this will be the fifth season that Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison will be playing together for the Washington Wizards, and the fourth season that these two have teamed up with Caron Butler. If the Wizards were a college team, Caron would be in the same position as Jessie Sapp.
