Maryland In-Game Thread
By JohnnyHey everybody, we’re about half an hour away from the biggest game of the Old Spice Classic. No, I’m not talking about the Championship. That’s later on between Tennessee and Gonzaga. First up is the third place game between Georgetown and Maryland, a local rivalry that is plagued by the lack of competitions. The last game was eight years ago in the NCAA Tournament, and this game, clearly, was not scheduled either.
I’m courtside at the Milk House for the last time of the tournament. I realized I never put up a picture of the arena. Here’s what the place looks like from outside. Actually, that’s what it looked like on Thursday. Today, it’s been very rainy and there have been tornado sightings somewhere nearby.
Anyway, keep your in-game thoughts coming in the comments, and I’ll provide whatever info I have for you.

November 30th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
Oh, I forgot to mention. This isn’t your standard third place game. Since there has been a loser’s bracket in this tournament, the winner gets third place, but the loser gets fifth. Michigan State earned fourth place honors by beating Michigan State earlier today in the 4th/6th place game.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
man ive been waiting for this game all day, and watching the redskins lose certainly didnt help pass the time.
we really gotta win, i cant deal with a loss to this maryland team…
November 30th, 2008 at 5:21 pm
The Toledo High School band just played the National Anthem. Since this is the first time the Hoyas have been in the first game of the session, it’s the first time I had to hear the Star Spangled Banner.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
The teams just came out for some more layup lines, this time without warmup bottoms, so it looks like the Hoyas will be wearing blue and the Terps will be in white.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:23 pm
dont you mean, “the first time i was fortunate enough to hear”?
November 30th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
Speaking of colors, I don’t think I’ve mentioned this: the scoreboards here in the Wide World of Sports are kinda high-tech, and they change colors based on whats’ going on. Right now everything’s in yellow, but once a team takes the lead, their score is shown in green and the losing team’s score is turned red. Also, the clock turns red when it’s stopped and only goes yellow when the action’s on.
I can’t tell if it’s useful or confusing, but it’s kinda neat every once in a while.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
Have fun everybody…who do we have for the refs tonight Johnny?
November 30th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
Tony, they haven’t given word who the refs are. I’ll find out for sure come halftime, but maybe I’ll recognize them when I get a good look at them.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
The PA announcer used to announce the refs pre-game, but all it did was encourage boos and personal attacks.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
Time for the starting lineups.
For the Hoyas, it’s your same five:
Summers, Wright, Monroe, Freeman, and Sapp
For the Terrapins, it will be:
Landon Milbourne, Braton Dupree, Eric Hayes, Sean Mosley, and Greivis Vasquez
November 30th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
watching on ESPN 2, thank goodness no len elmore today…he hates on the hoyas even when we arent playing his alma mater, im glad i dont have to listen to him today
November 30th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
Looks like / sounds like the Hoyas are outnumbered in the stands.
This is the first time the Hoyas have worn their away jerseys all season, and it looks like they have a nice new trim don the dis of the shorts. Looks like a white stripe to me, but it could be gray.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
lets go hoyas!!!
November 30th, 2008 at 5:33 pm
Hoyas lose the tip first but get a stop on the possession
November 30th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
nice shot
November 30th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
Jessie gets the Hoyas on the board with a three pointer. Let’s see if the Hoyas can keep their score green from now on.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
we have to take care fo the ball though, the guys dive for steals all the time
November 30th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
Backdoor to Wright puts the Hoyas up 7-2.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
nice back door, do it all night
November 30th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
DaJuan gets a strange offensive foul. I don’t know if Maryland even wanted it.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:38 pm
itll help if they miss their open threes, but we gotta do a better job of getting out at their shooters
November 30th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
nice look there for dajuan
November 30th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
nice take!!!!!
November 30th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
Hoyas stretch the lead to 12-4, the biggest so far tonight, and Gary needs a timeout.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:41 pm
Missed shot for the Terps, ball goes out of bounds to the Hoyas, and it’s now the sixteen minute timeout with 14:29 left in the half.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
This is also the first time the Hoyas play in the night session here in the Old Spice Classic. So I’m not sure if they’ve been doing it all week, but this is the first time I hear a band during the timeouts. They’re playing Green Day now.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
Early on the Hoyas are running the offense well, getting some backdoor looks. Some of the passing is still a little sloppy, as the Terps are getting some hands on the passes, but Georgetown is certainly taking advantage early on of Maryland’s overplaying.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
Ref didn’t call that one til after the basket missed. I wonder if there was a foul on the last backdoor to Chris too.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:45 pm
nice pass from monroe in tight quarters, need to make the fts
November 30th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
Hoyas’ second foul of the game. Second strange offensive. That one was on Jessie, off-the-ball.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
are you kidding me??? two offensive fouls already???
November 30th, 2008 at 5:47 pm
Third offensive. This one’s DaJuan’s second. He got called for pushing as he was going for an errant pass.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:47 pm
wow, that ref is horrible
November 30th, 2008 at 5:48 pm
good take by freeman, gotta be careful about the foul trouble though
November 30th, 2008 at 5:48 pm
Nikita coming in for the first time this tournament.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
Greg shows off his baby hook to push the lead back to 11.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
nice move from monroe there
November 30th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
take care of the ball hoyas…good start though
November 30th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
Looks like Greg could have caught that one; just took his eyes off it for a second. That takes us to the 12 minute ttimeout, Hoyas up 19-8.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:52 pm
I’m looking at the Maryland coaching staff in front of me during this timeout, and it looks like they all have the Old Spice Classic logo on the sleeves of their polo shirts. All the coaches have been dressing casual, but I haven’t seen any other shirts sponsored by the tournament.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
It will be interesting to see how Maryland does with both Vasquez and Hayes on the bench, there first possession didn’t bode well for the Terps
November 30th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
Now Omar’s checking in for the first time.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:55 pm
i think we can live with taht
November 30th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
Yeah for Orlando International Airport and free internet.
Let’s not get too excited about Omar just yet.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
big shot for clark
November 30th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
that is a horrible horrible horrible call….compounded by thr fac tath the ball was out when neal tried to save it
November 30th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
Gary Williams calls another 30 second timeout as the Monroe hoop pushes the lead up to 15. The Hoyas up 26-11 with 8:13 left in the first half. Terps ball after the timeout.
November 30th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
Vaughn got to check in now. He tried to run in a little earlier, but the table hadn’t cleared him to enter.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:00 pm
keep working that backdoor fellas
November 30th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
Chris Wright draws the charge, pumps his fist, and heads to the sideline. It’s the 8:00 timeout, Hoyas leading 28-13 with 7:05 to go.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
Half court shot contest. This MD fan just got booed for having his shot land at the freethrow line
November 30th, 2008 at 6:04 pm
SEND IT IN!!
November 30th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
Is it just me or does the backdoor work much more effectively against ACC teams?
November 30th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
Third foul on Wattad. In comes Henry Sims
November 30th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
Again, the refs aren’t calling fouls until after they see the result of the shot. That time, Greivis clearly hit Austin on the arm, but they didn’t call it until the shot airballed. That upset a large amount of Maryland fans, and I’d say rightly so.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
how is that not goaltending??
November 30th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
Monroe thought his last attempt was goaltended, and I think this time he got upset. He drove to the basket and got fouled. Both teams will be shooting for the last 4:00 of the half.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
come on greg, make the fts
November 30th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
3:43 left in the first half, Hoyas with a 36-15 lead over their crosstown foes. Sapp just had his shot blocked, but the ball remains with the Hoyas, inbounding underneath the basket.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
Maryland comes out of the time out playing zone, and the Hoyas seemed a little confused on their offensive set.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
Austin Freeman tried to pull a Don Reid circa March 1995, but his reverse putback rattled out.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
Terps cut the lead to 18, and Coach Thompson uses his free first half timeout
November 30th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
come on hoyas, no let up, dont let maryland back in the game
November 30th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
lets get a stop here
November 30th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Shot clock shouldn’t have reset there, but I guess the missed dunks was karma or something.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
obvious foul on neal there….greg, hit the fts this time please
November 30th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
Wright’s half court shot fails to fall, and it’s 38-20 Georgeotwn at halftime.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
alright, nice half…still plenty of time for them to come back, cant let up in the second half.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
Don’t believe the score…it ain’t over. We need to keep it up. Summers will appear in second half after foul trouble, defense needs to stay TOUGH!
November 30th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
The Hoyas with a big 18 point lead going into the half. The Hoyas did pretty well executing against the Maryland man-to-man pressure, but once the Terps switched to a zone, they didn’t get much done. When the Terps are in their zone, the perimeter shooters are wide open, they need to be able to take the shots. But, all in all a pretty good half offensively and defensely for the Hoyas. I cannot say the same for the Terps. Or the referees.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
Have to be tough on threes, that’s how Tennessee killed us late in the second half.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
For you Tony, here are the refs:
Duke Edsall, Dan Chrisman, and Lee Cassell. Chrisman’s the older ref who was doing the Tennessee game too.
Half time stats:
* Sapp leading all scorers with 10.
* Summers only player 8 minutes, since he didn’t come back after picking up his 2nd foul.
* Hoyas shooting 52%, Terps 32%.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
The Toledo High School pep band is now playing Three Dog Night’s “Joy to the World.” Oddly enough, no Jeremiah is a bulldog sign around.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
Georgetown with the ball to start the 2nd half.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
no let up hoyas, lets go
November 30th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
DaJuan Summers was going in for a big dunk, got slapped on the arm and the face, and the ref calls an intentional. He goes 1-2 from the line, and it’s Hoyas’ ball up by 21.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
wow, thats a hard foul, what is gary complaining about? dude almost took off summer’s head!
November 30th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
DaJuan makes up for the missed free throw by hitting a three.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
Little shove by Wright there. As the whistle goes, he smiles and nods his head, knowing he was a little guilty there.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
Summers is feeling it. 7 straight points on two possessions.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
summers is on fire….”dont smack my head!!”
November 30th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
thats too easy penetration for them
November 30th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
Technical foul on MD. Not sure what happened, since the PA guy said it was the bench (I guess that means Gary) but it was the far ref who called it.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
they didnt show the free throw
November 30th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
gotta make the free throws there
November 30th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
Sapp missed them both after going 14-14 so far on the season. He’s still perfect though when he gets fouled
November 30th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
nice ball movement there, textbook
November 30th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
For the first game of the season, the Hoyas look hot from three. Now the Hoyas are winning 52-26.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
come on hoyas, 16 more minutes, fellas, no let up, this result could stick with us for a while, no excuses
November 30th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
As I was saying, the Hoyas have gone 7-13 from three, and that’s including the missed half-court attempt by Wright to close out the first half.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
nice hook there
November 30th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
dajuan, why do you try to get offensive fouls?? fortunately, the refs arent too good today
November 30th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
I heard a Hoya fan behind me say, “Let’s double their score.” A little ambitious, but it’s been working so far.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
another soft hand check on wright there
November 30th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
backdoor all night
November 30th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
gotta get out on hayes, they only have two shooters
November 30th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
An ill-advised shot by Wattad on that possession. I’m sure Coach is none too pleased with the quick shot, regardless of whether it goes in.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
Speedy Clark goes in for two, 63-33 Hoyas.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
Good take by Clark and good finish.
November 30th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
vasquez is 0-5. totally shut down.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
6 team fouls on both teams, everyone will be shooting for the last 10:52
November 30th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
stupid turnover there, but fortunately its our first stupid one of the game, not too bad
November 30th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
There’s Greivis’ first points of the game. Some Hoya hecklers clapped for him, after taunting him for having 0 points.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
First basket for Vasquez comes 30 minutes into the game.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:04 pm
Woohoo Vaughn with points
November 30th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
Ooh. Ten second call. Ouch.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
10 seconds? thats not right tehre
November 30th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
DJ watch your spelling!!
November 30th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
Some Maryland fan, yelled “Go get a cheeseburger” as Vaughn was shooting that free throw. I remember somebody yelling that at Don Reid when the Terps came to the Caps Center back in 1994.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
Timeout Coach, as Clark was trapped by the Maryland press. Hoyas lead 69-38 with 8:20 to go. This timeout will be stretched to a full.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
about 8 minutes left hoyas, no let up…keep scoring and tight defense…make the maryland fans remember why they dont want to play us every year
November 30th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Johnny, did Gary not call a timeout this half?
November 30th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
Are we still having a problem getting past a zone press???
November 30th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
I just got a press release listing 7 of the 8 teams for next year’s Old Spice Classic. So far, no Georgetown or Maryland, so a repeat of this matchup won’t be happening in Orlando
November 30th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
nice work by austin
November 30th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
No Gary timeouts until now, big A.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
Nori, Nikita inbounded to Clark in the corner of the baseline and the sideline. I don’t know why Clark didn’t try to force his way between them, but Coach called the timeout before he tried an outlet pass to Chris Wright.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
@ Nori,
The Hoyas have been good so far, only turnover against the Maryland press was inbounding from midcourt. We were trapped once in the corner, but called timeout. But, Maryland’s press seems to only try to trap on the first pass. Hoyas are handling it well.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
Coach needs to start trusting these guys. He can’t make it through the season with only the big five.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Hoyas cruising, up by 35, 73-38 with 7:18 to play.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
Nori, all the subs are playing and running the offense pretty well
November 30th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
Big cheers from the other side of Terminal A . . . they may be watching football.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
another missed layup by Nikita, he gets good looks, hes gotta try to convert
November 30th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
Score’s been stuck at 73-40 for quite a while now.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Sims fixes that by dunking the rebound after another Hoya missed layup
November 30th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Hennnnnrrrrry!
November 30th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
wright, play smart, if this game were close, that would make me mad
November 30th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
That’s Wright’s fourth foul, an offensive. And it’s now the 4 minute timeout, Hoyas leading 75-44 with 3:57 to go.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:24 pm
Looks like Chris will stay in with his four fouls.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Omar checking in to replace Wright. That might be the last we see of Chris in this tournament.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
today must have the record for travels called. that must be number 15
November 30th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
This game turned out to be such a romp that Gary won’t need to dry clean his suit
November 30th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
@Nori,
That was 5 subs, and Hoyas got a shotclock violation. No one looked like they wanted to shoot.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Coach calls a 30 second timeout to bring Bryon Jansen into the game. Henry Sims to shoot two freethrows when we get back. 75-44 Hoyas with 53.1 seconds to play.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
I guess no free throws… I’m confused.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
Jin-Soo Kim makes sure it won’t be a 30 point victory for the Hoyas.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
Not as confused as the ref with the bad shaggy hairdo
November 30th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
And the refs are making sure it won’t be a 2-hour game.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
oh, but no travel there??
November 30th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
YES!!! We whooped them good. I will sleep well tonight.. well done fellas!!!
November 30th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Omar’s gonna dribble it out, and that’s the final score. 75-48 Hoyas. Hoyas claim 3rd place in the Old Spice Classic, and Tennessee will face Gonzaga in about half an hour. Check out thebruceballblog for info about Tennessee.
That’ll do it for me down at the Milk House. I may post some stuff after the press conference, but that wouldn’t be until later tonight or tomorrow morning. Check back for the recap and box score from my fellow writers at Hoya Hoops
November 30th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Aaaaahhh
