Pittsburgh In-Game Thread
By JohnnyHey everybody, Johnny here from the Verizon Center as we’re about half an hour away from the Georgetown Hoyas’ first home Big East game of the season. Their opponent is the #3 Pittsburgh Panthers who as of yet are undefeated, going 13-0 in 2008.
There aren’t too many students here so far since they’re still on their winter break, but we’ll have to see how many make it by tipoff. Right now, Jack the Bulldog is going one-on-one against Dick Vitale, and it looks like Jack is schooling Dicky V.
I’ll check back with as many updates I have, and feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments. It should be a great game between two of the top teams in the best conference in college basketball.

No official word yet, but the scoreboard has these listed as the starters:
The usual 5 for the Hoyas: Summers, Wright, Monroe, Freeman, and Sapp.
Fields, Dixon, Biggs, Young, and Blair for the Panthers.
The refs are going to be Mike Kitts, Mike Roberts, and Pat Driscoll

The young man in the suit on Georgetown’s bench is Hollis Thompson, who finished high school early and is now enrolled at Georgetown.
Unfortunately, he won’t be suiting up…but it’s nice to have him on the bench in a learning capacity.

There are a whole lot of Pittsburgh fans here. A bunch scattered in the lower bowl, and then practically all of the upper deck. So far, they’re louder than the Hoya fans.

It was pretty loud during the Pitt starting lineups, and I can hear some boos as they’re announcing the Hoyas’ starting 5. I think that the cheers are outweighing the boos, though, which is a good thing.
Hopefully, the Hoyas can get out to an early lead to avoid any Pitt cheers from forming.

DaJUAN
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Huge dunk for DaJuan. After beating some pressure, Wright drove to the hoop and dished to Summers who ran in from the baseline for a two-handed jam.
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:09 pm
DaJuan couldn’t convert on an alley-oop, Monroe picked up foul #1, and the Pitt fans are cheering as we head into the 16:00 timeout with the Panthers up 10-5.

Wattad checks in for Sapp.
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:17 pm
Great pass from Freeman to a cutting Monroe for a jam.

January 3rd, 2009 at 12:27 pm

Official timeout with 7:28 left in the half. Hoyas are still losing, 23-19.

Jiffy Lube Trivia Question:
Which NBA team recently signed Georgetown great Dikembe Mutombo to its roster for the rest of the 2008-2009 season?
A. Chicago Bulls
B. Boston Celtics
C. Orlando Magic
D. Houston Rockets
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:31 pm
(It was D)
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:33 pm
Henry Sims is set to check in.
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:49 pm
Sorry everybody, the internet’s been acting up here. With a minute to go in the half, Summers forced his way to the basket through a crowd of players and got a layup to cut it to one.
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:50 pm
A missed opportunity to end the half for the Hoyas, and Pitt has the lead 33-30. Georgetown has been behind since 0-0.
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:50 pm
chris kept us in it for a while there. him and summers potg so far
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:55 pm
Halftime with the Hoyas down three. DaJuan Summers keeping the Hoyas in it with 16 points. Georgetown still needs to work on its defensive rebounds, as the team is giving up way too many offensive rebounds and second chance points. The crowd was a little indifferent early, but seemed to wake up with about five minutes left in the half. All said, Hoyas are very much in this game, but they will have to scrap for every ball to limit Pitt’s easy points.
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:06 pm
Monroe drives in for two to start the second half.
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:10 pm
Sapp misses a three on one end, but blocks DeJuan’s Blair shot on the other end to get the ball back.
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:10 pm
gotta take the lead at somepoint houas
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:11 pm
The Hoyas look a little out of sync to start the second, and Coach Thompson calls a timeout with his side back down 5.
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:14 pm
And out of the timeout, Hoyas tie the game for the first time since it started.
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:19 pm
Monroe picks up his second foul there. That’s the first foul for either team in the second half and we’ve already played 5 and a half minutes. I don’t know how some of the Hoyas’ takes inside weren’t called for a foul, but I can’t complain with that one on Greg.
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:21 pm
wattad is struggling
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:22 pm
Hoyas are not getting rebounds, and Pitt is taking advantage. They’re back up 6.
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:26 pm
come on hoyas keep in it
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:30 pm
With 9:04 to go, Hoyas trail by 7, 51-44.
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:33 pm
And Pitt pushes the lead to 13 now. Another timeout.
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:35 pm
Apparently, there were double technicals on Fields and Summers during the break.
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:36 pm
Monroe scores over Fields, refs call a foul, and it’s the official timeout. Greg will be shooting one when we get back, Hoyas trailing 57-46.
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:47 pm
Four minute timeout, and the Hoyas are down 68-49 with only 2:37 to play.
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:47 pm
not good hoyas
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:52 pm
Summers gets his season high today with those free throws. Hoyas are still down by 18, though, and the Pitt fans are getting a bit obnoxious.
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:55 pm
That’ll do it. The first home loss of the season for the Hoyas and the first conference loss too.
Pitt wins 70-54. Hoyas play again on Monday at Notre Dame, and here next Saturday against Providence.
