Syracuse Recap

By Hoya Hoops

Georgetown jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first three minutes against Syracuse, but that would be as good as it got for the Hoyas. Syracuse embarrassed Georgetown from that point on, cruising to a 73-56 victory.

After the great start, Georgetown looked complacent offensively. Syracuse’s 2-3 zone clogged the passing lanes and created steals, and the Hoyas were incapable of stopping the Orange on the other end of the floor. Georgetown trailed 34-29 at the half.

It was more of the same in the second, with Georgetown totally ineffective on both sides of the ball and looking more flustered and frustrated with every possession. The Orange, sensing the timidity, took full advantage, applying more pressure defensively and moving the ball quickly for open looks offensively.

Greg Monroe had one of his worst games of the season, fouling out with six minutes remaining with only eight points and six turnovers. Austin Freeman led Georgetown in scoring with 23 points, and Jason Clark was the only other Hoya in double figures with 15. Andy Rautins and Kris Joseph had 15 a piece to lead Syracuse, who improve to 20-1 on the season. Georgetown falls to 15-4.

The Hoyas will have a long time to think about this loss, as they don’t play again until their Saturday match-up against Duke at Verizon Center. The inter-conference battle is set to start at 1 PM.

I think I will call in sick tomorrow and avoid the humuliation I will certainly face all day. Memphis also lost by 17 (74-57) when they played Syracuse. I will hear about this one all year. To make matters worse, I told everyone at work the time and channel the game was one. Oh boy. Maybe I can take short term disability in order to stay away from work for a while…that way when I come back they will have forgotten about it. Doubtful, but still sounds like my best option.

  2. Zo Says:

Hoya Pride, Bobby. Go to work and to your job, even if you’re in a bad mood…that’s what Mourning and Mutombo would do. I think we may be able to all look back and laugh at this loss in about six weeks or so. It ain’t funny today, though.

  3. Ryan (Syracuse) Says:

    GO ORANGE!!

  4. john Says:

    CUSE CUSE CUSE!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Jeff (Syracuse) Says:

Consider this an opportunity to show the strength of the Big East. Yes you got whooped up on by SU, but take out your anger on the Dukies! Show that the Big East is THE power conference in the country, just like UCONN did to Texas last week!

I’m sure when we visit in a few weeks, it will be a whole different game.

  6. PGQ (Syracuse) Says:

I won’t talk trash because we’ll meet again in February and if the Hoyas hit thier outside shots like they did at the beginning of the game things could be different. Meanwhile BEAT DUKE.

  7. batty007 Says:

You just got had by the best Syracuse team ever. Don’t feel bad, just go out and do the same thing to Duke. And my advice is to stay home Feb 18th if you don’t want to see the Orange sweep the Hoyas this year.

  8. Bobby in Tennessee Says:

Thanks for the encouragement Zo. I will actually be at The Verizon Center for the Duke game
