Ohio Recap

By Hoya Hoops

The 2009-10 season came to a crashing halt for the Georgetown Hoyas in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Georgetown, the #3 seed in the Midwest region was beaten by the #14 seed Ohio Bobcats 97-83.

Ohio started the game hot from long range and never cooled off, shooting an incredible 13-23 (56.5%) from the three point line. Ohio was focused from the start, and after a slow start from the Hoyas, the Bobcats could sense an upset from the opening moments. Georgetown’s usually solid defense was very poor, allowing open jump shots and offering little resistance on drives to the basket. Ohio led by 12 points at halftime.

The second half proved to be more of the same for Ohio, as they extended to a 19-point lead about midway through the second half. Georgetown managed to cut the lead down to seven with five minutes to play, but timely shooting from Ohio provided all the breathing room necessary and the Bobcats were never seriously threatened.

Ohio’s starting backcourt of Armon Bassett and D.J. Cooper were the key players in engineering the upset, scoring 32 and 23 points respectively. The two guards combined to shoot 10 for 18 from three-point range.

The Hoyas had three players in double figures – Chris Wright scored 28 points, Greg Monroe added 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and Hollis Thompson scored 16 points off the bench for the Hoyas.

The once-promising season now ends very bitterly for the Hoyas, who have lost two straight NCAA Tournament games to lower ranked opponents. In fact, the last two NCAA Tournament games for Georgetown, tonight’s loss to Ohio and their defeat two seasons ago at the hands of the Davidson Wildcats, are the biggest upset defeats in Georgetown University’s NCAA Tournament history.
