Bad News for Patrick

By Hoya Hoops
  • Patrick Ewing Jr. was cut from the New York Knicks roster yesterday, failing to make the last spot for the second time in three seasons.
  • The Hoya Hoop Club Open Practice took place on Saturday at McDonough, and Hoya fans got their first opportunity to see the five freshmen practicing with the team. During the question and answer session, Coach Thompson talked about the tough out-of-conference schedule and the brutal start to the Big East season with three games in six days including two road games.
  • Late last week, 1989 Georgetown alum Charles Smith was shot twice in the chest in his Bowie, MD home. He is in critical but stable condition.

Hibernation

By Mike

HibernationWith a change in the leaves and a chill in the air, you may begin to notice the local woodland creatures in your neighborhood preparing for the winter. I have often wondered what it must be like to hibernate. And while an occasional 14 hour sleep does not compare to the six month slumber that some mammals have, I know of one thing I do that comes pretty close.

Austin Named Big East Preseason PotY

By Johnny

Austin FreemanBig East Media Day is today at Madison Square Garden, and the first piece of news out of the event is that the Big East coaches have voted Austin Freeman to be the conference Preseason Player of the Year.

This honor goes along with the Blue Ribbon Preseason Big East Player of the Year award and being selected to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 earlier this month.

The Madness Begins Now

By Mike

Angry JackWell, folks, it’s that time of year again. Time to dust off that gray jersey that has been hanging forgotten in the corner of your closet for the past seven months. Time to load up your Smart Trip card in preparation for Metro rides on the Red Line. Time to get ready for another season of Georgetown basketball.

At midnight tonight, the 2010-11 Georgetown Hoyas will practice together for the first time. But unlike in the past, when I have been ambivalent, excited, or wary, this year, Midnight Madness describes my exact emotion. I am mad.

Henry Sims Wants a Theme Song

By Johnny

Henry at Media Day

At the Preseason Media Day today, Henry Sims was sporting his new #14, and he gave us a brief explanation for his number change:

I’ve been in the 30s my whole life. I just decided to change it up a little bit. It’s my father’s birthday. That’s really the only reason. Just to mix it up a little bit.

He also told us what he remembered about the first Midnight Madness he attended.

The only thing I remember is Roy coming out to his own song. I want my own song so bad.

So Henry wants a theme song. Any ideas?

Midnight Madness Is One Day Away

By Johnny

Tomorrow night, Midnight Madness will be taking place at McDonough Gymnasium, and according to the Georgetown Basketball Twitter page, D.C. native Wale will be performing.

But just because practices can officially begin tomorrow night, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to cover today. I’ll be checking into McDonough in a few hours for the Preseason Media Day where Coach Thompson will give us his first insights into the season to come.

Stay tuned.
