Pittsburgh In-Game Thread

By Johnny

Hey everybody, Johnny here, sitting courtside an hour before the Hoyas’ biggest game to date a home game against the #5 Pittsburgh Panthers. Georgetown’s coming off of two straight losses, their first home defeat, and a disappointing 1-3 start to the conference. It’s going to be a big test to see how the Boys in Gray respond to adversity and perform tonight.

It’s still very early, but the students are here in full force as there were lines outside Verizon Center with kids eating burritos in the cold, and there are now crowds in both student sections for the first time in several weeks.

I’ll be checking in with all I know, but for now, here’s what I got:
Hoyas will be starting the same five – Clark, Wright, Freeman, Thompson, and Vaughn.
The Panthers are starting Brown, Gibbs, Wanamaker, Robinson, and McGhee.

And the refs tonight are Ed Corbett, Pat Driscoll, and Wally Rutecki.

Comments

  1. Johnny Says:

After warmups, Chris, Julian, and Moses ran in to the student section to get the crowd pumped for tonight’s big game.

  2. Johnny Says:

The scoreboard here at Verizon Center says “When lights go OFF towels go UP!”

  3. Johnny Says:

And @GUPepBand says the rest of the team went into the the student section while Chris, Julian, and Moses were behind me.

  4. Johnny Says:

Moment of silence for victims in Arizona.

  5. Johnny Says:

Greg Deutsch just finished the anthem – in the musical style of Sonny Eclipse – and now it’s time for the lineups.

  6. Johnny Says:

Lights are off, towels are up, and they all have lights in them so it looks kinda cool.

  7. Johnny Says:

They just showed a message from Roy in Indiana on the big screen. I think it’s the same one from last year though if I remember right.

  8. Johnny Says:

Hoyas lose the tip, and Wanamaker starts the scoring with a 3

  9. Johnny Says:

Clark ties it up with a trey on the other end

  10. Johnny Says:

At the first official timeout, it’s tied at five.

  11. Johnny Says:

Chris Wright picks up his 2nd foul in a hurry, and Starks replaces him.

  12. Johnny Says:

Nate misses two free throws, but Hoyas get the ball back.

  13. Johnny Says:

Hoyas down 6 at the 12:00 timeout. A lot of minutes for the bench so far in this one.

  14. Johnny Says:

Austin misses a front end of the 1&1 but Clark gets the rebound and fouled on the putback attempt

  15. Johnny Says:

Clark misses both and Hoyas are 2-7 from the line. Yuck.

  16. Johnny Says:

Hoyas went almost 5 minutes without a field goal and they’re down 11-24 at the 8:00 timeout.

  17. Johnny Says:

Jiffy Lube Trivia question is “Jersey Math!”
    Patrick Ewing jersey # – Jessie Sapp jersey # = ?

    A. 3, DaJuan Summers
    B. 10, Greg Monroe
    C. 12, Kevin Braswell
    D. 20, Darrel Owens

  18. Johnny Says:

    Hoyas 11 – Ashton Gibbs 11

  19. Johnny Says:

Gibs finally missed a three, Coach takes a 30-second timeout with Hoyas down 16-31. Shooting 2-8 from the stripe.

  20. Johnny Says:

The Hoya Shuffle is impossible. I’m 0-3

  21. Johnny Says:

Hoyas head into the locker room trailing by 17 – 24-41, and I heard some boos here in Chinatown.

  22. Johnny Says:

Second half about to start up, and it’s Hoyas’ ball.

  23. Johnny Says:

Clear goaltending on Vaughn doesn’t get called, and Clark takes it to the other end for 2 FTs

  24. Johnny Says:

The Georgetown Gatling gun shot a T-shirt in front of press row to the guy sitting directly under the basket.

  25. Johnny Says:

8-0 run for the Panthers, Georgetown takes a timeout down 33-55

  26. Johnny Says:

Jack the Bulldog ate the box, but I don’t know how much that will help tonight.

  27. Johnny Says:

The way these refs are calling this one, this game may never end.

  28. Johnny Says:

That may have been the worst call ever made. The signal? Standing straight, arms vertical, foul on defender. Wright to shoot two bogus free throws after the timeout.

  29. Johnny Says:

13 points – closest the Hoyas have been since 5 minutes left in the first half

  30. Johnny Says:

Down 12 with 3 minutes left, that three would have helped. Now Pitt’s shooting FTs

  31. HelmetHead Says:

Turnovers were the difference. Too many Hoya turnovers.

  32. HelmetHead Says:

    That and Gibs.

  33. Johnny Says:

Hoyas call off the dogs. Too little too late for Georgeotwn as they lose the third straight to be 1-4 in conference.

  34. Johnny Says:

Hoyas lose this one 57-72. Up next – @Rutgers
