Louisville Recap

By Hoya Hoops

Georgetown extended their winning streak to five games with their second three-point victory in three days, beating Louisville 62-59. Chris Wright led all scorers with 24 points, including a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line, while Terrence Jennings had 18 points for the Cardinals in the losing effort. The win improves Georgetown to 6-4 in Big East play, while Louisville was handed their third conference loss of the year.

The match-up between two Top 15 teams did not look like one at the start, as both sides played sloppily early, perhaps the aftereffects of the close games each team had on Saturday. At halftime, the teams had combined for more turnovers, 19, than field goals, 16. The Hoyas were up 22-18 at the break, despite shooting just 31% from the field.

The second half brought better play, as both teams settled down and took better care of the ball. The Hoyas methodically stretched out the lead to 11 with a three pointer by Austin Freeman early in the half. The lead hovered around there for a few minutes, before Louisville hit back-to-back threes to get right in the game. A free throw by Kyle Kuric gave the Cardinals a two point lead with under five minutes to go, 55-53.

Georgetown was able to respond quickly, as an acrobatic shot in the lane from Chris Wright was followed by a three pointer from Hollis Thompson to help the Hoyas regain the lead 58-55. After a series of offensive rebounds, Peyton Siva’s two free throws cut the Georgetown lead to one with under a minute to play. Jason Clark was fouled, and went to the line to shoot one-and-one. Despite going 0-6 from the field, Clark coolly knocked down both free throws. After a dunk by Terrence Jennings and two free throws from Wright, the Cardinals had 4.4 seconds to try to tie the game with a three. Siva’s last-second heave was well off the mark, and the Hoyas walked away with their second straight victory over a top 25 team.

The Hoyas do not play again until Saturday, when the team will play host to Providence. Tip-off against the Friars is at 12 PM from Verizon Center.
