It was a a tale of two halves at the Verizon Center, as #12 Georgetown stormed back from a 15 point deficit at the break to beat #13-ranked Connecticut 72-69 in front of 15,654 fans in Chinatown. Austin Freeman had a career-high 33 points, including 28 points in the 2nd half.

It was back and forth to start the game, until midway through the first half when Connecticut went on a 16-0 run due to transition layups and solid three-point shooting. With 10:17 left in the first half, Georgetown was winning 19-18; they didn’t score their next field goal until there were 50 seconds remaining in the half, and UCONN had gone on a 22-2 run. Four points in the last minute by Chris Wright cut the lead to 15, but the Hoyas still had a long way to go.

Coming out of the locker room, the Hoyas looked like a completely different team. Austin Freeman started scored ten straight points for the Hoyas to help cut the deficit to single digits, and strong defense coupled with solid rebounding gave Georgetown more opportunities to come back.

With eight minutes left to play, the Hoyas took their first lead since 19-18 after an Austin Freeman layup, and the Hoyas reached their largest lead of four with five minutes remaining. As the game was coming to a close, Julian Vaughn came up with critical plays on the offensive glass to make sure the Hoyas kept the lead.

Connecticut couldn’t score when down by one with under a minute to play, and after Greg Monroe’s layup with nine seconds to play, Stanley Robinson was forced to shoot a three to try to force overtime. The shot did not fall, and Greg secured the rebound – earning him his fifth double-double of the season – and the victory, 72-69.

The Hoyas play at home again on Thursday, facing the Seton Hall Pirates at 7:00pm.
