For the second time in three games, the Georgetown Hoyas found themselves in a 17 point hole in the first half against a ranked Big East opponent and were able to rally to make the game close. However, unlike in Georgetown’s 72-69 win over Connecticut, the Hoyas did not score on key possession in the end of the game, and fell to Villanova 82-77, snapping a five-game winning streak against the Wildcats.

The Hoyas took a 15-14 lead off a lay-up by Chris Wright, but the Wildcats would respond by scoring 14 straight points and would eventually extend their lead to 17. The Hoyas were plagued by foul trouble, with both Wright and Julian Vaughn picking up three fouls a piece in the first half. Georgetown trailed by 15, 46-31 at the break.

Georgetown came out in the second half a new team, using a 20-8 run in the first five minutes of the half to cut the lead to three. The game was very close the rest of the way, with Georgetown twice tying the score, but the Hoyas were unable to take the elusive lead. After a pair of missed three pointers to tie the game, the Hoyas were forced to foul, and Villanova went a perfect 8-8 in the final minute to seal the victory.

Greg Monroe had a game-high 29 points and 16 rebounds, while Villanova’s Scottie Reynolds had 27 points of his own. Due to foul trouble, Chris Wright played only 24 minutes and struggled to find his shot, going 1-7 from the field and 0-5 from beyond the arc, including a chance to tie the game with under a minute to play.

The Hoyas look to bounce back with another tough Big East road battle this Wednesday. Georgetown travels to Pittsbugh to take on the Panthers at 7:00 PM.
