Pittsburgh (#9) | 31 | 35 | 66 |
Georgetown entered the Petersen Events Center to take on a Pittsburgh side that had not lost at home in the last 31 games. The Hoyas broke that streak, coolly dispatching of the Panthers 74-66. Georgetown closed the game on a 20-10 run to hand the Panthers their first conference loss of the season.
The Hoyas fell into an early 6-0 hole, and it looked as though Georgetown fans would have to suffer through another lackluster first half performance. But, the Hoyas bounced back quickly to take an 11-8 lead, and the game was back and forth from then on, with nine ties and 11 lead changes. The teams were deadlocked at 31 entering half time.
Both teams came out of the locker room on fire, starting the second half by hitting a combined 11 out of the first 12 shots. With the score again tied at 56-56, Georgetown went on a 12-4 run to put the game out of reach, capped by a Chris Wright lay-up off an in-bounds with one second on the shot clock. That gave the Hoyas an eight point lead with under 90 seconds to play, and all but sealed the victory.
Chris Wright led four Hoyas in double figures with 27 points, seven of those coming during the critical 12-4 run. Pitt was led by Junior Gilbert Brown, who had a career-high 20 points, going 8-9 from the field. Ashton Gibbs, the Panther’s leading scorer coming into the game, was held to just eight points on 3-16 shooting.
Before returning to the road next Monday to take on Syracuse, the Hoyas will play host Saturday to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. For those unable to make it out to Verizon Center for the 12 PM start, the game will be shown on MASN.
