The Hoyas suffered their biggest setback of the season, losing to Rutgers 71-68. The Hoyas looked uninspired throughout the game, while the Scarlet Knights could smell upset from the onset. Rutgers was the aggressor throughout the game, and they led by a point at halftime, 33-32.

The Hoyas overcame an early eight-point second half deficit to lead by two, but immediately surrendered the lead, and Georgetown was again forced to play catch-up. After a power move by Greg Monroe gave the Hoyas a one point lead with under a minute to go, Rutgers’ Mike Rosario missed a 18 foot jumper. But, Dane Miller tapped in the rebound to regain the lead for the Scarlet Knights. The Hoyas quickly pushed the ball up court, but Chris Wright missed an open three-point look that would have given the Hoyas the lead. Free throws were exchanged at either end, and Austin Freeman’s desperation three at the buzzer to send the game to overtime was off.

Jonathan Mitchell led all scorers with 24 points, including two free throws with under five seconds left to help seal the win for Rutgers. Greg Monroe had 19 for the Hoyas, but it wasn’t enough to avoid another deflating loss.

The Hoyas will have to shake off this loss quickly as they next take on arch-rivals Syracuse on Thursday. Georgetown looks to avenge its embarrassing loss to the Orange from last month. The game is scheduled for 7 PM at Verizon Center.
