South Florida | 26 | 29 | 55 |
The Georgetown Hoyas got back on the winning track, defeating South Florida 61-55. The Hoyas were victorious despite getting only four points from Austin Freeman, who has been slumping in recent games, perhaps still the aftereffects of his ankle injury. Chris Wright picked up the slack, scoring a season-high 26 point to lead all scorers, while Augustus Gilchrist had 22 points for the Bulls in the loss.
Both teams started slowly, as it took over two and a half minutes before the first points of the game were scored. The Hoyas fell behind by seven due to poor rebounding, but closed out the half on a 11-2 run to take a two point lead into halftime, 28-26.
After the break, Georgetown slowly but surely built on their lead, going ahead by 11, 49-38, with under six minutes to play. But South Florida did not give up, cutting the lead to four with under a minute to play and forcing a Chris Wright turnover to gain possession. On that play, Hollis Thompson came up with a critical block on Hugh Robertson’s layup attempt, and Jason Clark secured the rebound. Wright then went a perfect 6-6 from the line in the final 30 seconds to seal the victory.
The win improves the Hoyas to 10-5 in conference play, with three games to play: a home-and-home against Cincinnati sandwiched around Senior Day against Syracuse. Georgetown returns to Verizon Center for their first match-up against the Bearcats on Wednesday, with a 9 PM start.
