There are two teams in the country that have three wins against the current Top 10. One of those teams is the #2 ranked University of Connecticut. The other team is the Georgetown Hoyas. Georgetown defeated the #10 ranked Villanova Wildcats in Philadelphia 56-54. Chris Wright scored 13 points including two free throws in the final seconds to help secure the win. DaJuan Summers led all scorers with 16 points and Nikita Mescheriakov added a career high 11 points.

In the first half, Georgetown’s smothering defense held Villanova to 29.2% from the field, including 0-6 from behind the arc. While the Hoyas scored 32 points off of 56.0% shooting, the Wildcats managed to stay in it by getting to the foul line where they scored 13 of their 27 points. With a final second alley-oop from Chris Wright to Greg Monroe, the Hoyas went into the half up five.

To start the second, Georgetown pulled ahead by eight, but they couldn’t extend it more than that with the momentum going back and forth for the rest of the game. Villanova finally cut the lead to one with 1:15 to go in the game, but that was as close as they would get as Chris Wright scored the final four points for the Hoyas. With 3.5 seconds left, Villanova guard Corey Stokes hit a three to cut the lead to two, but it was too little too late as that was Stokes’ first field goal of the afternoon.

The Hoyas will travel to New York to play St. John’s on Tuesday night in their final road game of the season. After that, they will return to DC for Senior Day on Saturday and then head back to Madison Square Garden for the Big East Tournament.
