The Georgetown Hoyas lost their final game of the regular season, falling to the Cincinnati Bearcats for the second time in as many weeks, losing 47-69 on the road. The Hoyas’ offensive woes continued as they only shot 32% from the field and failed to reach 25 points in either half.
Without senior point guard Chris Wright, Hollis Thompson took over the starting position again, and he started the scoring for Georgetown with an outside jumper to tie the game at two. Thompson was the best shooter on the day for the Hoyas, and he scored 7 of his 12 points in the first 20 minutes.
After leading for much of the first half, Georgetown couldn’t convert on offense and committed too many fouls on defense, allowing Cincinnati to stretch to a seven point lead. The Hoyas would eventually cut the Bearcat lead to three with 4 seconds left in the half, but a banked in three-pointer from Yancy Gates made the halftime score 24-30.
In the second half, Georgetown continued to have trouble on offense, making only 8 of 25 field goal attempts, and Austin Freeman and Jason Clark combined to shoot 0-8 from downtown. On the other end, Cincinnati stretched their lead with free-throws, connecting on 20 straight foul shots during one stretch of the game.
Dion Dixon led the Bearcats with 14 points, while Austin Freeman led all scorers with 21 in the loss. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to in the conference, which puts them in 8th place. They will have a bye on Tuesday, but will face the winner of Tuesday’s Connecticut-DePaul game on Wednesday at noon.
