For the second straight game, the Hoyas used a dominating last 10 minutes to pull away for a comfortable Big East Tournament win. Roy Hibbert scored a season-high 25 points, as Georgetown defeated West Virginia 72-55 to advance to their twelfth Big East Tournament final.
Georgetown used Hibbert’s size advantage to take a 12 point lead into the break. But West Virginia used a three point barrage to start the second, making five in a row as the Hoya lead was cut to four. Georgetown answered with a 16-0 run to take a 20 point, holding the Mountaineers scoreless for nearly eight minutes.
Joe Alexander, West Virginia’s leading scorer, entered the game averaging 28 points a game in the Big East tournament but struggled from the field. Georgetown used a variety of defenders led by DaJuan Summers and combined to hold Alexander to 12 points on 5-16 shooting. On the offensive side of the ball, Jessie Sapp had 13 to join Hibbert in double figures, and Jonathan Wallace and Summers each added nine.
The Hoyas now await the winner of the Marquette-Pittsburgh game to see who will be their opponent in the final. The Big East Tournament Championship game is tomorrow at 9:00 PM.
