The long-awaited Georgetown vs. Maryland regular season meeting was 15 years in the making, and it was over in 15 minutes. The Hoyas executed from the outset, scoring on several backdoors in the first few minutes. Greg Monroe made a basket to put Georgetown up 19-8, and the lead never got back to single digits the rest of the way, with the Hoyas leading by 18 points at the break, 38-20.
Georgetown started the second half on a 19-8 run, spearheaded by DC area natives Austin Freeman and DaJuan Summers, and eventually led by as many as 35 points. It was a balanced offensive attack for the Hoyas, led by Freeman’s 18 points. Monroe, Summers and Sapp also scored in double figures, as the Georgetown starters outscored Maryland starters 62-26. Greivis Vasquez, Maryland’s leading scorer, was averaging 20 points a game coming into the contest, but only had two points, going 1-7 from the field and 0-4 from beyond the arc. As a team the Terps shot just 31.6% from the field, compared to Georgetown’s 53.1%.
The Hoyas return home to Verizon Center to take on another local team, the American Eagles, on Saturday. Tipoff is at 1:00 PM.
