Ten Years in Ten Days: 2001-02
By Hoya Hoops2001-02 – Record: 8-5 (Conference 4-4)
Senior Class: Kevin Braswell
Georgetown was trying to build on their Sweet Sixteen appearance from one year earlier but had a lot of trouble with consistency. The Hoyas had a great game at home against Syracuse, beating the Orange by 15 - the most ever at the Verizon Center - but there will always be a dark cloud over this season. 2001-02 was the only season in the modern era that the Hoyas were cheated out of an NCAA Tournament berth. They were flat out gypped.
In Kevin Braswell’s senior season, the team had a number of close losses that they should have won, but when the NCAA Tournament field included Boston College, a Big East team with a worse conference record than Georgetown, whom the Hoyas had beaten on the road by 27 points, you can be sure that something was wrong with the selection committee’s judgment. It was a real shame that one of the greatest guards in Hoya History only got to appear in one NCAA Tournament.
The Good: On Senior Day against Rutgers, Kevin Braswell put on an amazing display. Braswell was the only senior on the team, and he took center stage on this, his day. In one of the most amazing individual performances ever by any Hoya, Braswell took over the game down the stretch. Georgetown’s final 23 points of the game were either scored or assisted by Braswell. At the start of this stretch, the Hoyas were up by nine points with nearly eight minutes left. By the end of the run, Georgetown was ahead by 22. Braswell tied the Georgetown single-game record for assists, and had an incredible assist to turnover ratio, 16 assists, 1 turnover.
The Bad: Georgetown was 6-6 in the conference, playing a crucial home match against Connecticut. The game was close throughout and went down to the wire. UCONN had the ball and a one-point lead in the final minute. There was about a six second difference between the shot clock and the game clock and the Hoyas decided not to foul. Caron Butler took his time, went one-on-one with Mike Sweetney, and missed a jumper. Braswell ran down the rebound in the corner, and had about four seconds to win the game. Braswell raced down the court but didn’t pull up for a jumper as Emeka Okafor was breathing down his neck. He desperately passed to Gerald Riley who couldn’t get a shot off in time. The Hoyas lost 75-74.
The Ugly: In the only quadruple overtime game in Big East history, the Hoyas were defeated by Notre Dame 116-111. Mike Sweetney scored 35 points and collected 20 rebounds in the losing effort, the only 30-20 game ever in the conference. The legendary performance from Sweetney however is overshadowed by the devastating loss.
