By Hoya Hoops

2006-07 – Record: 13-2 (Conference 7-1)
Senior Class: Sead Dizdarevic, Kenny Izzo, Jeff Green (Departed GU to enter NBA Draft)

2006-07 was one of the greatest seasons in Georgetown history. The Hoyas won the Big East regular season title, the Big East tournament, and the NCAA Tournament East Region, earning them a spot in the 2007 Final Four. The team started conference play 1-2, and then rattled off 11 straight wins to grab hold of the conference. Late in the season, the Hoyas hosted Marquette. The day was highlighted by the unveiling of the All-Century Team of the all-time greatest players during 100 years of Georgetown Basketball. The legends of the past gathered at center court at halftime, and the full house at Verizon Center got a special opportunity to cheer for these great players one last time on the court. The 2006-07 Hoyas made sure that the second half was a performance that the All-Century team would be proud of, and they prevailed 76-58.

The Good: In the regular season finale, Georgetown needed to win at home to claim the Big East regular season title. The team standing in their way was the Connecticut Huskies, a team that the Hoyas had lost to 11 consecutive times. Georgetown finally managed to break the streak, and they comfortably defeated the Huskies for the first time in over ten years. The 23-point victory gave Georgetown their first outright Big East regular season crown since 1989, and it was the first win over UCONN in the Verizon Center.

The Bad: Before Georgetown went on their fantastic streak, they did have some bad results. The Hoyas lost at the Verizon Center to Oregon 57-50. The loss came during a difficult stretch of the year when the Hoyas lost three out of five games. The 50 points that the Hoyas scored was the lowest total in a home loss in the tenure of JTIII.

The Ugly: Who else but Villanova would be able to leave a blemish on this remarkable season? After a blowout win over Notre Dame in the Big East opener, the Hoyas hosted Villanova. Georgetown basically sleepwalked through the game. They didn’t play with energy, confidence, or composure, and the Wildcats took advantage. Georgetown lost 56-52 in what was easily the most disappointing performance of the year at Verizon Center.

That concludes our Ten Years in Ten Days feature about the Verizon Center. Let’s see if the Hoyas can outdo themselves with the next ten.
