Some Game, Eh?
By TonyOn this day, 13 years ago, the Hoyas came up with one of their most enjoyable pre-conference schedule wins with an 83-80 overtime win against Memphis. The victory was a part of an 11 game winning streak for Georgetown, and it marked the first NCAA basketball game to be played in Toronto.
The Hoyas trailed by five points in the final moments of regulation, but Allen Iverson stole the ball and made a coast to coast layup to cut the lead to three. Georgetown got the ball back down by three in the final seconds. George Butler hit a three pointer at the buzzer to force overtime, and Georgetown prevailed in the extra session.
Jerome Williams led the Hoyas with 16 points and 14 rebounds on a night where all five Hoya starters scored in double figures. Sadly, this was the last major impact George Butler had with the Hoyas as he left the team four games later. It would have been fun to see how good that team might have been if Butler had managed to stay with the Hoyas during his senior season.

Anyone who saw this game will remember Butler’s 3pt to force overtime, but one of the funniest things I remember about that play is how Irvin Church was screaming for the ball as Butler was getting ready to shoot it. Chico was yelling and waving his arms because he was pretty open. He almost looked mad when Butler took the shot himself…until it went in of course.
It’s a real shame that BUtler’s career at Georgetown ended the way it did.
