NBA All-Star Weekend

By Hoya Hoops

Just a quick reminder that we’ve reached the NBA’s All-Star Weekend, and plenty of Hoyas are going to be in on the festivities.

  • Tonight at 9:00, Jeff Green and Thunder teammate Kevin Durant will be playing on the Sophomore team in the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge. The game will be shown nationally on TNT.
  • Also tonight at 9:00, Patrick Ewing, Jr. of the D-League’s Reno Bighorns will be participating in the Dunk Contest as a part of the 2009 Dream Factory. Patrick had a great showinglast year at the college Dunk Contest during Final Four weekend as he came away with second place.
  • Allen Iverson will be participating in the NBA All-Star game at 8:00pm on Sunday night. This will be Iverson’s 10th All-Star game, and his 9th time as a starter. The only year he did not start was in 2007, his first year in the Western Conference, after being traded to Denver, but he did not play at all in that game due to injury.

Georgetown at Syracuse

By Hoya Hoops

There hasn’t been a Georgetown-Syracuse game played in the Carrier Dome with the stakes this high for a long time. It is possible that this meeting has the most riding on it of all the regular season games ever played at the Carrier Dome in this rivalry. A loss for either team could easily result in an NIT appearance. Both teams will be desperate to avoid such a fate. With that in mind, let’s take a look back at some of the more memorable Georgetown-Syracuse games played at Syracuse. If you have any memories of games that didn’t make our list, feel free to leave us a comment.

Freshmen, Iverson, and Ewing Shine

By Hoya Hoops
  • The Georgetown Hoyas defeated the Providence Friars on Saturday 82-75. The Hoyas relied heavily on their freshmen as Jason Clark and Henry Sims played big roles off the bench and Greg Monroe had a standout performance with 13 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 steals, and 2 blocks.
  • #3 North Carolina lost again this weekend, this time falling to #4 Wake Forest 92-89. The highly touted Tar Heels had been the #1 pick in both polls for the first six weeks of the season but have now dropped conference games on consecutive Sundays.
  • Allen Iverson made his debut return to Denver after being traded to the Detroit Pistons for Chauncey Billups. The Pistons won 93-90 thanks to 20 second half points from Iverson. Billups had the game high 30 points in the losing effort.
  • Patrick Ewing Jr.’s team, the Reno Bighorns of the NBA Development League, have won five straight games over the past nine days. Over the course of the win streak, Ewing is averaging 16 points off of 50% shooting from the field to go with 9.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists.

Top 10 Stumbles

By Hoya Hoops
  • The Georgetown Hoyas defeated Mount St. Mary’s at Verizon Center on Saturday, extending their home unbeaten streak to 28. The Hoyas face Florida International tomorrow night at 7:30 in Chinatown.
  • Four teams from the Top 10 in both polls lost on Saturday. #5 Texas lost at home to #19 Michigan State 67-63, and #9 Louisville lost to the Minnesota Golden Gophers 70-64. In two Top 10 matchups, #7 Xavier fell to #6 Duke, 82-64, and #8 Gonzaga lost to #2 Connecticut in overtime, 88-83.
  • Allen Iverson had his best game as a Piston as he scored a season high 38 points in their 120-114 loss to the Jazz in double overtime.
  • Similarly, Roy Hibbert scored a career high 16 points in his double overtime loss to the Clippers. Big Roy started the game, played 23 minutes, shot 8-10 from the field, pulled down 8 rebounds, and had 5 blocked shots. And with all of that action on the court, he only picked up two personal fouls, which is a good sign for the foul-prone rookie.

Georgetown Season Begins

By Hoya Hoops
  • The Georgetown Hoyas return to the floor for the first game of the season. The team hosts the Jacksonville Dolphins at Verizon Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
  • While the Hoyas are having their first game today, most of the college basketball world got underway this past week. None of the teams in the Top 25 lost, as the teams were a combined 27-0. Georgetown and Louisville were the only teams in the rankings not to play in the first week. Third-ranked Louisville play their season opener on Saturday.
  • Allen Iverson is fitting right in with his new team. After losing efforts in his first two starts, Iverson and the Detroit Pistons had a successful tour through the Western Conference, finishing 3-1, which included handing the Los Angeles Lakers their first loss of the season. Iverson averaged 21.8 points and 7.3 assists on the road trip.

Open Practice and NBA Action

By Hoya Hoops
  • The Hoyas had their annual Hoya Hoop Club open practice on Friday and then scrimmaged against George Mason on Saturday. The scrimmage was closed to the press, and none of us could make it to the open practice, so we have very little details. Check out the Hoya Talk board for any details on the open practice.
  • Allen Iverson made his debut for the Detroit Pistons over the weekend falling both to the Nets in his first game as a Piston and to the Celtics in his first home game in Detroit.
  • Roy Hibbert had a career highs Friday in the Pacers’ losing effort against Cleveland on Friday. He scored 11 points, pulled down nine rebounds, and had a pair of assists. Unfortunately, he also had a career high in personal fouls, fouling out of the game with nine minutes to play.

Roy’s next game is tonight at 7:00 against former teammate Jeff Green and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

From Georgetown to Motown

By Mike

As we reported earlier this week, Allen Iverson was traded to the Detroit Pistons. He is now the third member of the 1994-95 Georgetown team to play in Motown, the first two being Don Reid and Jerome Williams. Many Georgetown fans remember his abbreviated stay at the Hilltop, and though it may seem like only yesterday, it was in fact 14 years ago that Iverson first put on the blue and gray. With that in mind, let’s take a look at The Answer’s already storied NBA career.

AI in the Carrier Dome

By Johnny

Last year, when the Denver Nuggets came to D.C., I was at the Verizon Center to interview Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony about the upcoming Big East season. Allen wasn’t in the greatest mood, and being a little timid from my first time in an NBA locker room, I didn’t get a chance to talk with him. I eventually caught up with Carmelo and got a couple of quotes for Tony’s preseason article. (To tell you the truth, I was so hesitant, I actually walked out with Carmelo because I waited until I was the last guy from the media in the locker room and then I had to hurry through my questions so he could leave.)
