Georgetown at Syracuse

By Hoya Hoops

There hasn’t been a Georgetown-Syracuse game played in the Carrier Dome with the stakes this high for a long time. It is possible that this meeting has the most riding on it of all the regular season games ever played at the Carrier Dome in this rivalry. A loss for either team could easily result in an NIT appearance. Both teams will be desperate to avoid such a fate. With that in mind, let’s take a look back at some of the more memorable Georgetown-Syracuse games played at Syracuse. If you have any memories of games that didn’t make our list, feel free to leave us a comment.

#5 – 2002: Georgetown 75 – Syracuse 69

Georgetown was still fighting for an at-large bid late in the season when they traveled to the Carrier Dome on the day that the court was officially named “Jim Boeheim Court”. The mayor of Syracuse was on hand and had declared the day Jim Boeheim Day, but Hoya fans will remember it as Gerald Riley Day. Riley scored a game-high 18 points, including a three-pointer in the closing moments which sealed the win for the Hoyas. Kevin Braswell added 16 points, 5 assists, and 4 steals. This game was also the last time the Hoyas won in the Carrier Dome.

#4 – 1995: Georgetown 81 – Syracuse 78

It was a two-man wrecking crew for the Hoyas, as Othella Harrington and Allen Iverson led the way for Georgetown. Harrington scored 27 points, shooting 10 for 15 from the field, and Iverson added 21 points and 6 assists. The Hoyas came from behind to defeat Lawrence Moten, John Wallace and company.

#3 – 1984: Georgetown 80 – Syracuse 67

The Hoyas were without Michael Jackson who was out with a sprained ankle. Freshman Reggie Williams was put into the starting lineup and scored a game-high 22 points on 10 for 13 shooting from the field. Georgetown trailed by three at the break but dominated the second half. Afterwards Reggie said, “These are the kind of games I came to Georgetown to play. When I heard the crowd I wanted to do something they would remember.” Don’t worry, Reggie. They will always remember you.

#2 – 1988: Georgetown 69 – Syracuse 68

Sherman Douglas scored with eight seconds left to put Syracuse in front and send the Carrier Dome crowd into a frenzy. In those days the clock didn’t stop after a made basket in the final minute, so the Hoyas quickly got the ball to Charles Smith. Smitty weaved down court through the entire Syracuse defense and flipped up a soft layup that floated through the net as the buzzer sounded. If you look closely at the highlight, Mark Tillmon is totally wide open, waving his arms frantically for Smith to pass him the ball. Smith decided to do it himself, and I’m sure Mark didn’t mind once the shot went in.

#1 – 1980: Georgetown 52 – Syracuse 50

This was the final game in legendary Manley Field House. The Orangemen had won 56 home games in a row, and they were looking to close out the arena in style before moving into the new state of the art Carrier Dome. Syracuse led by 15 points with 14 minutes left, and the Syracuse fans started celebrating a little prematurely. Even without the use of a shot clock or three-point line the Hoyas slowly chipped away at the lead and tied the game in the final minute. Eric “Sleepy” Floyd made a pair of free throws with five seconds to play and the desperation shot at the buzzer bounced off the front of the rim.
