The Georgetown Hoyas lost in overtime to the 23rd-ranked Syracuse Orange in front of over 30,000 fans at the Carrier Dome. In a game of streaks, the Hoyas started out strong but lost their lead by halftime and headed into the break trailing 32-33.
After falling behind by 16, the Hoyas started a comeback and with 13 seconds left, Chris Wright hit a long three-pointer to tie the game. On the final play of regulation, DaJuan Summers stole the ball at Syracuse’s free throw line, dribbled across midcourt, and missed a three to win the game.
In overtime, the Orange’s Eric Devendorf hit two three-pointers, and Jonny Flynn hit clutch free throws to seal the victory. Georgetown’s Chris Wright and Syracuse’s Jonny Flynn each scored a game high 25 points, which was a career high for Wright. Austin Freeman added 19 points but only shot 4-8 from the free throw line, which wound up to hurt the Hoyas. Syracuse got to the line 34 times to Georgetown’s 17, and while a few missed free throws helped Georgetown come back from their large deficit, on the afternoon the Orange shot 76.5% from the line as opposed to Georgetown’s poor 58.8%.
The Hoyas are now 4-8 in the conference and will have to travel to Tampa on Wednesday to face the South Florida Bulls.
