Connecticut In-Game Thread
By JohnnyHey everybody. Johnny here at the Verizon Center. It’s an hour and a half before tipoff, but the students have already been allowed in. I was talking to a student named Danny outside the gates, and he told me that he got here at 10:00 AM. Not bad for a 2:00 start. Let’s hope the students can be extra vocal today in their first game back from Christmas break.
Last year, the Hoyas defeated the Huskies in their last Big East game of the season 59-46. This is a different UCONN team, and Georgetown will have a battle on their hands in their Big East home opener.
I’ll check back in with lineups and any other info I pick up before game time.
January 12th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
Alright, here’s some news for you. I just saw Chris Wright, and he’s still in street clothes. Yesterday, Coach said that he thought he was better than 50-50 to play today and that he had started practicing with the team again, but it looks like it will be a no-show from the freshman ball handler this afternoon.
January 12th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
Thanks for the Wright update. Let’s go Hoyas.
January 12th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
No problem. Also, here are the refs for the game:
John Cahill, Jim Haney, and Mike Stuart.
Lineups on the board have big known to be wrong, so I’ll hold out on those till they announce them.
January 12th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
Also, Sead Dizdarevic is here today. He’s dressed in a suit behind the bench talking with Senior Sports Communications Director for the Hoyas, Bill Shapland.
January 12th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Some more new stuff:
The GU Pep Band just played “Call Me Al” by Paul Simon. I think that’s the first time they’ve played this year - I may be mistaken. But that was once a classic along with the recently reinstated “Hawaii 5-O.”
Also, there’s a new Jack today. He’s got a new, scarier head than the old mascot. They actually pulled this face out at the Radford game at McDonough, and then they switched back to the usual head. I saw it and was going to post something, but since they brought the old head back, I thought I was being delusional. Guess not.
January 12th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
What’s Sead doing these days? I thought he was playing in Europe.
January 12th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
lets go Hoyas!! Sead is a good sign. He will bring victory.
January 12th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
man- bummer about CHRIS!!! i hope he plays soon (if not today, then again PITT!!). johnny- any more news??
January 12th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
No more news about Wright. Seriously, Coach said yesterday that he was improving. But he hadn’t gotten Lorry Michel (the head trainer)’s update yet. So maybe she thought he needed a little more time off the ankle, or maybe they’re just playing it safe.
But about Sead, I heard that he had played in Montenegro for a while, but I’m not sure if he’s still playing, if it’s their offeseason, or what.
January 12th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
u da man johnny, thanks for the update. lets go HOYAS!!!!
January 12th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
Jim Calhoun will not be coaching today, he is in the lockerroom with flu-like symptoms and George Blaney will be coaching in his stead.
January 12th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Hey, thanks E. Missed that one.
January 12th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
Wow no Calhoun. Thanks Evan
January 12th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
The Chimes just finished the National Anthem, and now Coach Thompson is celebrating Roy Hibbert and Jonathan Wallace joining the 1,000 Point Club
January 12th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
way to go you two. All time greats!
January 12th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
And here are your starting lineups:
For UCONN: Adrien, Robinson, Thabeet, Dyson, and Price
For the Hoyas: Freeman, Summers, Sapp, Wallace, and Hibbert.
January 12th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Let’s go Hoyas. No letups. Just wins.
January 12th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
Opening tip goes to the Hoyas who start the game with a turnover - travelling on Hibbert
January 12th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
And after a nice trap by Wallace and Hibbert at midcourt, Cahill makes his second call of the game, foul on Wallace.
January 12th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Nice Defense Hoyas. Great pressure
January 12th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
There goes Hibbert’s 100% three point shooting. A minute and a half gone, still 0-0.
January 12th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
You gotta make your layups
January 12th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
At the 18:20 mark, Summers starts the scoring 3-0. And now it’s also 3-0 in fouls, 1 on Wallace, Summers, and now Hibbert.
January 12th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
sapp’ll think twice before driving on thabeet aain
January 12th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Looong 2 from Freeman makes it 9-1 and UCONN needs a timeout.
January 12th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
big rebound– like the aggression
January 12th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
There’s the second foul on Summers. And it’s time for the 16 minute timeout. Hoyas winning 9-3
January 12th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
That’s alright. Keep up the intensity on D. Let’s get some hoops on offense though.
January 12th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Great d J-wal
January 12th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Hoyas forced their second jump ball of the game. Very high intensity defense.
January 12th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Foul on Ewing, 5 team fouls to 0
January 12th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Unbelievable no call there, as Hoyas grab a steal and throw an outlet pass to Wallace. Off the ball, Wallace gets knocked over, and UCONN grabs the ball. Then a foul on Sapp. 6-0
January 12th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
They’ll be shooting for the rest of the half. Unbelivable
January 12th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Thats the way Hoyas
January 12th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
First foul on UCONN leads to a mock standing ovation by Hoya fans.
January 12th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Way to play Pat!
January 12th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
what is that? this game is out of control
January 12th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
They call a strange foul on a 3 point attempt, and now Summers is checking back in with two fouls
January 12th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
I love DaJuan
January 12th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
So unlucky. Good play Jessie.
January 12th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
After Sapp stripped UCONN, he saves the ball from going out of bounds to a Husky who hits a three for UCONN’s first lead. But Ewing responds with a three, and Roy comes up with a humongous block.
January 12th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
way to play ROY!!!
January 12th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
Catch and land. It’s not that hard. At least Pat got his own rebound after that failed alley-oop
January 12th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
After the 8 minute timeout, Pat’s freethrows make the score 28-23 for the Hoyas. And now Freeman checks back in for Ewing.
January 12th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Nice take DaJuan!
January 12th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
fouls?
January 12th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
@DJ:
9-6.
Wallace, Sapp, Ewing, Summers each have two fouls. And Hibbert’s got 1.
January 12th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
1-1 for Roy then. hit your free throws.
January 12th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
Lots of turnovers today for both teams.
January 12th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Thompson calls a 30-second time out winning by three, 34-31 with 4:34 to go.
January 12th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
Roy missed the front end of his last 1 and 1. Let’s see if he can fix that now.
January 12th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
There you go Roy.
January 12th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
Great job on the boards so far, Hoyas.
January 12th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
Rivers’ pull up jumper puts the lead back up to 7. Looks like the timeout have helped both coaches.
January 12th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
Now UCONN needs a timeout.
January 12th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
Great work Hoyas!!
January 12th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Sorry about that. Some technical difficulties. But Hoyas end the half up 42-38 and all Hoyas escaped with less than 3 personal fouls, which seemed unlikely based on how the half started.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
To start the second half, UCONN got the ball, and they come up empty as Roy pulls down the rebound.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Roy gets a bucket and a foul, Thabeet’s 3rd.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
Then a handcheck on Wallace is his 3rd.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
And there’s Roy’s 3rd too.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
That’s no good - we need those guys.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Now Dyson’s picked up his third. And I have no clue what he did. The refs have lost control of this one.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Ewing gets called for his third. What did he do? Watch as one of the Huskies drove into the lane and slipped.
Refs didn’t want to call a travel, so they called a mysterious trip.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Sloppy all around.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
And now Dyson’s picked up his fourth. Another wrong call. Wow.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
Free throws are going to be important today. Seven fouls in seven minutes of the second half. Luckily, that was Freeman’s 1st. He might be playing a lot here in the 2nd.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
thats too easy for Roy — way to play
January 12th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
nice rebound Jessie!!
January 12th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
At the 12 minute timeout, Hoyas are winning by two, 51-53 with Ewing going to the line. Hoyas will be shooting for the rest of the half, as that was UCONN’s 6th team foul of the half.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Hit your freethrows. its that simple. come on pat.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
How many times are they gonna try to goaltend on Roy in one possession?
January 12th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Sloppy sloppy.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
And there’s Roy’s third.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
UCONN just took the lead 57-56 with 8 and a half to go.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Thompson needs a timeout down 3.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Come on Hoyas, step it up!
January 12th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
At the 8:00 minute timeout, Hoyas now down 5, 61-56 with DaJuan shooting two.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Where are the refs now?
January 12th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
AUSTIN!!!!
January 12th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Freeman’s three cuts the lead to two, and the fans here are going crazy.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
DaJuan looked scared that tiem
January 12th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
4 minute timeout. Hoyas down 67-61. UCONN has the ball with 2 on the shot clock, but I think that’s the wrong call. Looked like it should be Hoyas ball.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Don’t know what’s going on, but the refs are looking at a TV replay for something.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
let em play
January 12th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
AUSTIN!!!!! AGAIN!!!!!!!!
January 12th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
JESSIE!!!!!!!!!!
January 12th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
Very loud in here and everyone’s on their feet. Except the student section. They’re jumping.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
Great foul by Austin. Thabeet’s shooting instead of getting an easy dunk.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
UCONN up two after Thabeet’s trip to the line with 1:55 left
January 12th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
thres a goaltending on the big man!
January 12th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
Blaney needs a timeout for UCONN to talk things over with the game tied with under 2 minutes to go.
January 12th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Excellent defending by Pat Ewing to get a block and to help get the team rebound
January 12th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
PAT!!!!!
January 12th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
“WE ARE….. GEORGETOWN” — students.
Hoyas have the ball with the game tied and 1:20 left in the game
January 12th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
Enough with the TV replays. Look too much at that, and they may realize they’ve missed three goaltendings and 100 fouls.
January 12th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
Refs watched the tape and changed it, 1:23 left.
January 12th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Austin misses the three - UCONN rebounds
January 12th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Wiggins misses a two and Sapp grabs the board. Timeout Georgetown, still tied at 69 with 31.3 to go.
January 12th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
I can’t watch. Come on Hoyas. Let’s wrap this one up.
January 12th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Some nice shots here at the Verizon Center of the intense Hoya crowd.
January 12th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Roy hits a three with 2.7 seconds to put the Hoyas up 72-69
January 12th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
ROY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
January 12th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
Who needs Wright? We got another 3 point scoring machine!
January 12th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
Refs change the clock again - 4.0 seconds left.
January 12th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
No fouls. PLEASE no fouls
January 12th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
“Roy! Roy Roy Roy! Roy Roy Roy! ROY!” — students
January 12th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Now it’s 4.2 seconds. Soon they’ll have a fresh 35
January 12th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
Players on the court: Ewing, Sapp, Rivers, Summers, and Freeman
January 12th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
YES!!!!!!
January 12th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Good defense to close out, and Hoyas win 72-69 thanks to BIG ROY!
January 12th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Great game Hoyas. Played tough throughout!
January 12th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Roy is clearly emotional as he is bouncing on his way to the locker room high fiving all the fans he can reach
January 12th, 2008 at 8:03 pm
Thanks for the play by play- nice job guys. Hats off to the Hoyas from one disappointed Huskies fan
