When I was just a little obsessive Georgetown fan, I had a shirt that said “Heart Attack Hoyas - #1 in the Big East”. That seems like a lot of text for a T-shirt, but it was the early 1980’s. Somehow I still have the shirt, which my son now wears to the games at Verizon Center. Earlier this season another long-time Hoya fan saw my son’s shirt and said, “Wow, nice shirt!” I guess he thought that maybe I had found it on eBay or some thrift store or something. I told him, “Thanks, it used to be mine about 25 years ago.” The guy responded, “Wow.” I couldn’t tell if he was more impressed or more weirded out. I also don’t know how a shirt that I used to wear when I was 8 years old is now a little snug on my two-year old when the shirt had just been in a closet for over two decades. I like that my son can wear the shirt, mainly for posterity and historical value. But, as it turns out, the team has some Heart Attack tendencies like when I used to wear the shirt at the Capital Centre. More »
Georgetown:
The Hoyas showed good composure down the stretch in this one. They were trailing by six with under four minutes left and continued to run their sets. The result was an 11-2 run to close out the game. Lots of Hoyas made big shots when it mattered and did a good job getting stops and securing the rebounds on the defensive end. More »
This video didn’t make it to the big screen at the Verizon Center, but we’ll still post it here for your entertainment. Everything is a little more entertaining after Roy’s big three.
The first Rival Reels of 2008 was brought to you by none other than your friends at Hoya Hoops. Unfortunately, we had to change the audio because of copyright issues on the web, but we hope you can still enjoy the Adventures of Kevin B Zlotnick.
Roy Hibbert made a 3-pointer with 4.2 seconds remaining to break a tie and give the Hoyas a 72-69 win over the UCONN Huskies today at Verizon Center. Georgetown stays perfect in Big East play (3-0) and is now 13-1 on the season. The Hoyas trailed Connecticut by six points with under three and a half minutes to play, but closed the game on an 11-2 run, highlighted by 3-pointers from Austin Freeman, Jessie Sapp, and Hibbert. Hey everybody. Johnny here at the Verizon Center. It’s an hour and a half before tipoff, but the students have already been allowed in. I was talking to a student named Danny outside the gates, and he told me that he got here at 10:00 AM. Not bad for a 2:00 start. Let’s hope the students can be extra vocal today in their first game back from Christmas break.
Last year, the Hoyas defeated the Huskies in their last Big East game of the season 59-46. This is a different UCONN team, and Georgetown will have a battle on their hands in their Big East home opener.
I’ll check back in with lineups and any other info I pick up before game time.
There was much speculation before the season began about how good this year’s Georgetown team would be. Many discussedadnauseum the role Jeff Green played in the Hoyas’ Final Four run last year and wondered how the Hoyas would fill the void. But the consensus was still that the team had the pieces in place to return to the Final Four. The question was: could the Hoyas put all the pieces of the puzzle together? More »
