Alonzo Saves the Day Again

By Johnny

After being entered into the Georgetown Athletics Hall of Fame, Hoya great Alonzo Mourning can now be named Miami Crossing Guard Hall of Fame.

Listen to this amazing story about #33 on Route 1 in Miami:

Crossing-guard Alonzo

Mourning’s vehicle had been sitting in traffic on the right lane, when he spotted a disabled person sitting in a motorized wheelchair along the curb. Mourning jumped out of his SUV, stood in the road and stopped traffic by raising his long arms, while the wheelchair-bound pedestrian made it to the median. Then, the seven-time NBA All-Star immediately went to the southbound lanes and raised his arms to command stunned drivers to stop. All traffic movement instantly stopped, and the wheelchair safely made it to the other side.

After making sure the citizen was safe on the other side of the road, Mourning lowered his arms and headed to his SUV to the sound of cheering fans, who recognized the 6-foot-10 temporary crossing guard.

It’s not news for Hoya fans, but Alonzo Mourning is an incredible human being.

Chris Cooley and Utah State

By Johnny

Chris Cooley - Utah StateHoya Hoops reader Billy Cox sent me an email Sunday night after the Redskins’ loss to Minnesota at FedEx Field. Here’s what it said.

Talked to Chris Cooley, Redskins tight end and Utah State Alumni, after there loss to the Vikings today in the player parking lot and asked if he was going to Georgetown game Saturday. He said no, but he was going to dinner with the Utah State team Friday night and they have a very good chance of beating the Hoyas because State has a good team this year.

As much as we love Chris Cooley, we hope the former Aggie’s wrong about this one.

Upcoming Hoya Charity Events

By Johnny

The first game of the season may still be two months away, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to keep us busy until then. Georgetown is the oldest Jesuit university in America, and John Thompson III has really taken the Jesuit mission to heart, trying to be a man for others through service.

JTIII Foundation: September 18 and 19

This weekend, the John Thompson III Foundation is hosting charity events to benefit the Washington Jesuit Academy, an all-male middle school in DC. A part of the Third Annual Foundation Weekend, the benefit dinner will take place on Friday night at WJA, and there will also be a JTIII Community Fest going on on Saturday. For more information, check out GUHoyas.com, call 202-508-8250, or email info@jtiiifoundation.org.

Hoyas Out of Playoffs, JTIII Watching

By Hoya Hoops
  • After injuring his knee in Game 2 of the opening round of the NBA Playoffs, Dikembe Mutombo has announced that he was retiring from basketball.
  • Even if Allen Iverson were to get healthy in the next month, it wouldn’t make any difference, as the Cleveland Cavaliers kicked his Detroit Pistons out of the NBA Playoffs last night. With that, no Hoyas are left in the postseason. If Houston were to win, however, Dikembe would still earn his first NBA Championship ring.
  • Coach John Thompson III was seen at the Verizon Center on Friday watching the Capitals in the NHL Playoffs. With the Caps winning both games this weekend, we might catch JTIII at the Phone Booth again tomorrow.

DC vs MD

By Johnny

I come from the state of Maryland, but I associate myself with DC sports. I cheer for the Hoyas, United, the Redskins, the Caps, and the Wizards. Heck, I’ve even been a Nationals fan all of my life, blindly believing my father’s claims that there once was a baseball team in Washington. (My father, it should be noted, still is hesitant to cheer for the Wizards since they used to be the Baltimore Bullets.)

Election Day

By Hoya Hoops

Today is the day. The day of the biggest election of our lifetime according to many political historians. We at Hoya Hoops try to leave the political analysis to experts like Mark Shields, whom you can find on PBS’s News Hour and also at the Verizon Center quite often supporting the Hoyas.

So even though we won’t technically announce who we support, we feel like it should be pretty easy to read between the lines. For example, if it comes down to supporting a tall black man who is considered to be the rising star of his profession, or a short, balding, white guy who has been doing the same job for 30 years and often comes across as whiny and annoying, who do you think Hoya Hoops would support?

Homeboy

By Tony

For those of you who live or have lived in the nation’s capital, you know there is only one sports team that really affects the life of Washingtonians as a whole, the Washington Redskins. If the Wizards are good, some people rally around them, and everybody can see that Gilbert Arenas is a pretty cool guy. Alex Ovechkin is a national and international sensation, but the Caps barely register on the local sports landscape. There was incredible excitement when Washington finally landed a baseball team, but after building the new stadium, the team moved back to Montreal or something, at least that’s what I assumed since the TV ratings and attendance are at the bottom of Major League Baseball. D.C. United has won four league titles since 1996, but if you don’t know what Barra Brava means, than you also probably don’t know that there is a pro soccer team in DC either. Basically, DC is not a sports town, except maybe during football season.

Not a Good Year

By Johnny

A few weeks ago, we talked about the Wizards and the Capitals both making the postseason for the first time in 20 years. Well, the first rounds are over, and both Washington teams are taking their summer vacations a little earlier than they would have liked. And sadly, that seems to have been the trend this past year for most D.C. sports.

10th Year’s a Charm

By Hoya Hoops

All year long, Washington, DC has been celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Verizon Center. The state-of-the-art arena has rejuvenated Chinatown and has quickly become a DC landmark. Unfortunately, the resident teams have not faired so well over the past ten years. We already talked about Georgetown’s past ten seasons in their new home, and quite similarly, the Wizards and Capitals have also had some pretty rough years in that span. Also like the Hoyas, though, the two teams have had a recent resurgence and both are poised to make the playoffs for the first time in Verizon Center history.
