Marquette | 32 | 30 | 62 |
The Georgetown Hoyas suffered their first conference loss of the season, a nail-biter at the hands of Marquette, 62-59. The game was extremely close throughout the entire second half, with no team ever leading by more than three points.
With the Golden Eagles up 60-59 with 30 seconds left, Maurice Acker missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving Georgetown a chance to take the lead. Austin Freeman drove to hoop and pulled up for a short jumper, but his shot was off. After Marquette added two more free throws, Chris Wright’s desperation three pointer to tie came up short.
The Hoyas started the evening sluggishly, turning the ball over on three of their first four possessions and connecting on only one of their first six shots. But, Georgetown quickly righted the ship, thanks to Julian Vaughn’s post presence; he had eight points at the break.
Marquette answered Georgetown’s inside scoring with a three-point barrage that would ultimately carry the Golden Eagles to victory. David Cubillan was 6-6 from beyond the arc, and the team as a whole shot an incredible 46% from three-point land.
The Hoyas were led by Austin Freeman, who had 20 points and six assists in the losing effort. He seemed to put his team on his back down the stretch, but was unable to carry the Hotas to victory.
The schedule of a Big East team is not a forgiving one, as the Hoyas return home on Saturday to take on the #13 ranked Connecticut Huskies. The mental toughness of this Georgetown team will be tested in this game. Tip-off is at 12 PM at Verizon Center.
