Over 20,000 fans filled Verizon Center to see two heavyweights square off for an interconference battle. The Georgetown Hoyas turned a potential barn-burner into a laugher, easily dismantling the Duke Blue Devils 89-77 in a game that was not as close as the score suggests.

The game was close in the early going, with both teams exchanging leads. But after the Blue Devils took a one point lead off a tip-in midway through the first half, Georgetown blew the game open, using a 18-3 run over the span of two minutes to take control of the game. The Hoyas shot 77% from the field in the first half, were a perfect 7-7 from the free throw stripe, and took a 13 point lead into the break, 46-33.

Duke opened the second half with a push to turn the game into a contest, using back-to-back three pointers to cut the lead to seven. But the Blue Devils would never get closer than that, as the Hoyas continued to coolly execute on the offensive end, and applied high-pressure defense on the other. Georgetown would lead by as many as 23 points before the Blue Devils would use a mini-run to make the scoreline more respectable.

The Hoyas had three players score in the 20′s, with Chris Wright and Greg Monroe each scoring a game-high 21 points, and Austin Freeman adding 20. Nolan Smith led the Blue Devils with 19 points. The Hoyas shot an unbelievable 71.7% from the field for the game.

Georgetown returns to Big East action this Wednesday, as the team faces South Florida at 7 PM Verizon Center.
