The Georgetown Hoyas extended their winning streak to seven games, defeating Syracuse 64-56. The Hoyas closed out the game a 12-1 run to earn the victory, the first win for Coach John Thompson III at the Carrier Dome. Austin Freeman scored 14 points to lead the Hoyas, with Julian Vaughn and Jason Clark each adding 12. Kris Joseph had 14 points in the losing effort, with freshman CJ Fair adding 12 points off the bench for the Orange.
The game was closely contested throughout, with no team leading by more than six points until the final moments. The Hoyas took an early 16-10 lead, but the Orange responded with a 13-2 run. The Hoyas trailed by two, 31-29, at the half.
Georgetown trailed by as many as six in the second half but thanks to a 13-3 run extended to a 44-40 lead midway through the half. The Hoyas then went cold from the field, going six and a half minutes without a field goal. The Hoyas trailed by three, 55-52, with under four minutes to play, when Julian Vaughn found a wide open Hollis Thompson on the wing, who hit the three pointer to tie the game and start the critical run that sealed the victory.
The Hoyas have a chance to make it eight in a row at home against Marquette. Georgetown takes on the Golden Eagles at 1 PM on Sunday at Verizon Center.
