The Georgetown Hoyas outlasted the Louisville Cardinals 55-52 to win the Big East regular season title for the second consecutive year. As they have done all season, the Hoyas sealed the deal in the final seconds.
Trailing by one, Jonathan Wallace made a fadeaway jumper with less than two minutes to play. After a Louisville free throw tied the game, DaJuan Summers made a three-pointer with 38.6 seconds remaining. Then in the final moments, Georgetown tightened the screws defensively, forcing two difficult three-pointers that would have tied the game. It was the fifth game of the season that the Hoyas won on their final defensive possession.
It was Senior Day at Verizon Center, but freshman Austin Freeman took the spotlight. He scored a game-high 15 points, including 12 in the second half on 5-6 from the field. As for the seniors, Roy Hibbert had 12 points, six rebounds, and four blocks, Wallace added nine points of his own, Patrick Ewing Jr. had five points, three rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks, and Tyler Crawford pulled down one rebound in his one minute on the court. Terrence Williams led Louisville with 14 points, David Padgett scored 12 points, and Earl Clark had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Georgetown begins its defense of the Big East Tournament title on Thursday at 12:00 PM against the winner of the #8 seed/#9 seed game, which will be played at noon on Wednesday.
