Hey everybody, Johnny here at the Verizon Center. This is the biggest game of the year. The biggest game of the history of the Verizon Center. The last home game for Roy, Jon, Pat, and Tyler. And it’s the Championship game for the Big East Regular Season Title.
Only the students have been allowed in so far, and it’s a pretty neat atmosphere right now. The Verizon Center staff haven’t started the music yet, and since it’s so quiet, the students have started a mini pep rally. When the Hoyas came out (still not in full warmups yet), the students here gave them a standing ovation. It was a pretty powerful moment, as the previously silent arena erupted with noise for the thirteen players walking onto the court. And yes, I mean thirteen players: Chris Wright is dressed to play.
It was a great gesture for these student athletes, and I’m sure the players, the seniors in particular, will want to return the favor, by giving the fans their second straight Big East Regular Season Championship.
I’ll be keeping you updated with starting lineups, in-game commentary, and any other information I find. Keep your comments coming too below.
March 8th, 2008 at 11:18 am
Let’s go Hoyas! Win this one for the seniors.
March 8th, 2008 at 11:33 am
Half an hour away from opening tip, and both teams are out warming up. The clock here says 19:00 to go, so that’s how long you people on your way have to get here before the National Anthem and Senior Day festivities.
March 8th, 2008 at 11:34 am
Is Freeman starting again or is his ankle still bothering him?
March 8th, 2008 at 11:36 am
I don’t know how his ankle is doing, but the big screen here at Verizon has him listed as starting. That’s been known to be wrong before, but for now it has the same starting lineup the Hoyas have used for most of the season, meaning Pat can go back to being the 6th man of the year.
March 8th, 2008 at 11:37 am
Oh, and like Tony already reported, it looks like Tyler and Pat will not start just because it’s their last home game.
March 8th, 2008 at 11:39 am
let’s go hoyas!! wish they were showing the senior day stuff on tv
March 8th, 2008 at 11:41 am
and im glad to hear chris is out there—our secret weapon is being released!!
March 8th, 2008 at 11:48 am
Hoyas are warming up, and Pat, Vernon, DaJuan and Tyler are having a dunk contest in the layup lines.
March 8th, 2008 at 11:54 am
National anthem over with, it’s time to honor the seniors.
March 8th, 2008 at 11:55 am
First, manager Greg Feensy
March 8th, 2008 at 11:57 am
Loud standing ovations for Tyler and Pat. Then super loud for big Roy. And lastly, the former walk-on gets crazy applause from the Verizon Center faithful.
March 8th, 2008 at 11:58 am
game time now. thanks seniors. when one more at home
March 8th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
Starting lineups:
For the Cardinals - Williams, Clark, Padgett, McGee, and Smith
For the Hoyas - Wallace, Summers, Freeman, Sapp, and Hibbert.
Refs: Pat Driscoll, Mike Kitts, and Michael Stephens
March 8th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
Come on Hoyas. One more win!
March 8th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
This place is pretty packed. There are several sections of Louisville fans, but the lower deck is pretty much gray and not very much red.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
I wouldn’t bet my house on it, but it looks like the Hoyas are in new uniforms. There’s a little more white around the collar making the gray undershirts look out of place. But they’re still predominantly gray, so that’s a good thing.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
Clark gets Louisville on the board first with 1 of 2 freethrows
March 8th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
DaJuan’s got 5 - 5-3 Hoyas.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
wallace!!
March 8th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
Louisville turnover makes it the 16 minute timeout, Hoyas up 8-7 with 14:22 left in the half.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
That first press break didn’t look too good, but they’ve been handling it better I think.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
Jeff Green’s mom is here today, and the student section is showing some appreciation.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
horrible tarevelling call
March 8th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
anysign of jeff?
March 8th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
No sign of Jeff yet, and I don’t think he can make it today with his NBA schedule. But we’ll wait and see. Maybe they’ll find him and put him on the big screen
March 8th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
go up strong big fella
March 8th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
nice D pat!
March 8th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
Both teams are shooting 3-9. Good defenses going against each other this afternoon, but the Hoyas have got to step it up offensively in this critical home match.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
Great pass from Rivers, but how was that not a foul?
March 8th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
Pat draws the charge to send us to the 12:00 timeout. Score? Still 8-7 Hoyas.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
goaltending on pat there?
March 8th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
Patrick has been playing great today. Really giving the energy he’s supposed to provide. He’s already got a block and a couple steals/deflections. This time he earned himself two free points from the stripe.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
great ball movement. Too bad Austin’s shot didn’t fall.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Second time today that a lob pass to the big man hits the rim and becomes a turnover - one for each team now.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
WOW - unbelievable one handed pass from Patrick to a cutting Wallace for two.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Off the ball foul called on Caracter for pushing Roy down low leads to the next official timeout. Hoyas up 12-9 with 7:01 to go.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
Nice post up from Sapp earned two points. I remember he tried that a few times in another game and he looked horrible. Much better execution from the little guy.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
boo
March 8th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
That over the back is foul #2 on Summers. He’s been pretty aggressive on the board lately, that time I guess a little too aggressive.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
Make your dunks DaJuan!!!!
March 8th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
Another missed dunk from DaJuan, and Louisville gets an alley-oop going the other way. Huge turnaround. And you can tell DaJuan was upset as he started stomping the floor after the play.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Come on Hoyas, step it up!
March 8th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Williams’ field goal gives Louisville their first lead since early on in the game, 15-14
March 8th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Horrible turnover by Rivers, but worse call against Freeman.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
That was a clean strip by Freeman.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
is anybody here actually at the game or just watching on tv?
March 8th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
Just watching on TV
March 8th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
Big threes from Patrick Ewing and Austin Freeman give the Hoyas the lead back, 20-19 with 1:30 in the half. Louisville needs a timeout.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
@Chris,
I’m here on press row in section 107
March 8th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
Amazing block by Hibbert gets the crowd excited.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
And nice assist gets them on their feet.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
tv
March 8th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
Coach Thompson uses his free timeout of the first half with 13.9 to go to set up one last play. Hoyas are up 22-19.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
Not sure if that’s exactly how he drew it up, but two points is two points, and the Hoyas head into the locker room up by five 24-19.
March 8th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
Nice rebound Roy. Big play
March 8th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Second half..let’s go hoyas
March 8th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
Nice start by the Hoyas so far. Roy, after scoring only 2 points in the first half (the last two) comes out and gets a field goal on his first touch. Maybe it’s because he took off his undershirt again.
And then after a backdoor by Freeman, the score is 28-20 Hoyas, their biggest lead of the game, and Pitino needs a timeout.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
That’s how to start a half. Keep it up.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
After being manhandled with no call, Roy takes it up strong and scores through Padgett. Next time down, Padgett misses against Roy. This is becoming a real Big East battle of the big men.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
that was the strongest, most aggressive play from Roy in a long time.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
austin hasn’t played this well in a long time either. nice!
March 8th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
FREEMAN AGAIN!!
March 8th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Roy is playing unbelievably. Normally he struggles when there’s a lot of contact. That time, he barged through it, and made the clean pass out to Sapp. There was a foul called, but he still made the right play.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
FREEMAN AGAINN!!!!!!
March 8th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
Freeman!!!!!
March 8th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Freeman has just made 8 straight points for the Hoyas. Unbelievable again. Pat in the first half, Roy to start the second, and now Austin. The players are stepping up today. Biggest lead for the Hoyas: 40-29, and Pitino needs another TO
March 8th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
After an incredible block from DaJuan sending it into the crowd, it’s the 16:00 timeout, Hoyas up 11 and Louisville with 17 seconds to shoot.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Wallace lost the handle in the backcourt (he thought he was fouled) but he wouldn’t be able to beat the press without his dribble, so he wisely used the Hoyas’ first timeout of the second half.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Nice way to start the half, but let’s slow down the turnovers.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Crazy offbalanced shot. How did that go in?
March 8th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
After three consecutive turnovers, Coach is set to check Wallace and Summers back in.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
wtf
March 8th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
No Padgett = too easy for ROy
March 8th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
At the 12:00 timeout, Hoyas are still leading 42-36 with 11:29 left in the game.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
The guy doing the Verizon Triple-Play Shoot Off or whatever it’s called is the guy who walks Jack around during the games. He’s got a press pass showing.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
And here’s something I’ve never seen at the Verizon Center. Looks like the Young Alum section is trying to start the wave.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
With Padgett = classic matchup. wow
March 8th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
They got to call it both ways. Wallace was murdered dow there.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
The refs are getting into it. That point was a little too emphatic from Michael Stephens.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
Roy just dunked in easy 2 that he would often time lay in. The aggression is there today.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Freeman’s 3rd foul sends us to the 8:00 timeout with the Hoyas up four, 44-40 with 7:44 left in the game.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Maybe we can end this half like we started it? No stress down the stretch? I would like that.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
After winning a couple hundred bucks shooting freethrows, now he’s taking Jack on the court to eat the Louisville box.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
And with 6:55 to go, Caracter ties the game at 44.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
It’s actually a little loud for the Cardinals.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
sapp!!!!
March 8th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Crazy play by Sapp, timeout Louisville, and the crowd goes wild.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Back to bad press break.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Padgett ties the game with 5:00 to go and Louisville can get back into their press
March 8th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Hoyas need a timeout.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
The Cardinals fans here are being more vocal than the Hoyas right now. The Hoyas were overpoweringly loud once Freeman gave them the lead back, but during this timeout, the Cards are winning.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
Very bad press break is back
March 8th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
Roy powered his way through Padgett again and the Hoyas fans are loud again.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Williams’ three gives Louisville the first lead since the break 51-51 with 3:24 to go.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Coach calls a timeout after that offensive rebound, but you could hear “DE-FENSE!” way too loudly for the most important home game in a million years.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Step it up Hoyas. Too many heartattacks
March 8th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
I’ve never seen the refs stop the play because of a sweaty ball. And it leads to the last official timeout. Hoyas trailing by one, 51-50, with 2:36 to go. Louisville’s ball.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Pat with a near steal, and then with a steal.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
Wallace makes a double clutch fade away in a crowded lane with the shotclock winding down to give the Hoyas the lead with under 2 minutes to play.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Foul on Summers sends McGee to the line shooting one and one down one.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Sorry, shooting two. But he missed the first.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Internet chose a great time to go down. With the shotclock winding down, DaJuan Summers hits a HUGE three to put the Hoyas up by three points with 38.6 to go. Those are his first points since scoring the first 5 of the game for the Hoyas.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
DAJUAN!!!!!!!!!
March 8th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
I love DaJuan Summers. Now close it out.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
Summers!!!!
March 8th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
Louisville missed a three, Rivers pulled down the board and was fouled, and the Hoyas can make it a two possession game.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
Rivers misses the front end of the one and one, still three point game.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Two missed threes for Louisville trying to get a foul call, and the Hoyas win 55-52. Back to back regular season champions!
March 8th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Hoyas Win! Hoyas Win! Hoyas Win! Hoyas Win! Hoyas Win! Hoyas Win!
March 8th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Trophy at center court. Hoyas wearing championship T-shirts. Fans chanting, “We Are Georgetown!”
March 8th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
cbs is pissing me off i want to see the trophy ceremony and they are showing stanford at usc like anybody cares about that game
March 8th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
stanford at usc like anybody cares about that game
I’m sure Condi Rice hurried home to catch that one!
