Gone Fishin’

By Johnny

Following along with Tony’s analogy about last night’s game being a critical home Game 6, I’ve decided to play TNT analyst and provide some end-of-the-season photoshop humor.

It may not be the end of the season yet, and Georgetown can win the Big East Tournament to earn themselves a spot in the Big Dance, but right now, it looks like it’s fishin’ season for the Hoyas.

But when you think about it, the Hoyas winning the Big East Tournament is much more likely than the Hoyas losing 9 out of 11 including to Seton Hall and twice to Cincinnati. So I guess the boys should stick to the gym and away from the Potomac.

Mike’s Louisville Postgame Thoughts

Teams

Georgetown:
In this critical game for their postseason hopes, the Hoyas started flat, not looking at all focused, turning the ball over and allowing Louisville to jump out to a sizeable first half lead. The team then regained focus and scrapped to get back into the game, but spotting one of the best teams 17 points is not a formula for success. Neither is shooting 31% from the field in the second half.

Louisville Recap

By Hoya Hoops

Georgetown’s NCAA tournament hopes took a severe blow tonight, as the Hoyas dropped their second straight home game and fourth of five overall conference games, this time at the hands of the Louisville Cardinals, 76-58.

The Hoyas fell behind early, trailing by as many as 17 in the first half, before chipping away at the lead. Jessie Sapp’s three point bank shot at the first half buzzer capped a 7-0 run which left the Hoyas down only 10, 31-41, despite the Cardinals shooting 70% from the field, including a perfect 6-6 from beyond the arc.

Louisville In-Game Thread

By Johnny

Hey everybody, Johnny here at the Verizon Center 45 minutes away from Game 6 for the Hoyas in a do-or-die situation as they face the #6 Louisville Cardinals.

Tonight marks the first time that the two most talked about freshmen in the Big East, and possibly in the entire NCAA, face off as Georgetown’s Greg Monroe is set to meet Samardo Samuels. We’ll have to wait and see who wins that individual matchup, but the more important question is if Georgetown can sneak away with a victory. They’ve been playing much better in recent games, but execution down the stretch and closing games is something that has still been missing.

We’ll find out in about three hours when this one’s done, but until then, we’ll just have to wait and see.

You know what to do. I’ll post back with lineups and refs in just a bit.

Game 6 Tonight

By Tony

Things are not as bad as they seem for the Hoyas. This will not be a feel good piece about the future of the Hoyas, or an unrealistic assessment of the underachieving team. In all seriousness, things could be worse. Here’s what the Hoyas face right now. They need to do some convincing - specifically they need to convince the selection committee that they deserve an at-large bid. The only way to really make a strong case for that bid is to win out. Period. That will not be easy, but it is a workable task, and it is a pretty reasonable undertaking if you put it in the right context. It’s an analogy that all hoops fans can understand.

Two in Three

By Hoya Hoops

The Hoyas got back to their winning ways, pounding the South Florida Bulls 65-40. The team shot the ball well from everywhere on the court, including from the free throw line, making 9-12 for 75%. Bobby in Tennessee was the closest to the percentage with his guess of 73%. However, since Luca was only one missed free throw off - he guessed 9-11 - we are going to declare a tie and give each of them the win. The t-shirt race heats up! Congrats to both Bobby and Luca.

The Hoyas now have a crucial home stand against two of the the top teams in the conference. If the Hoyas fare well, they can send a message to the selection committee. If they lose both, Georgetown will have to brace itself for an NIT berth at best. Here is our question:

What will the Hoyas record be in the two games and how many total points with Georgetown score?

It’s very tough to play Saturday-Monday games, so we think the Hoyas will split, going 1-1. We also anticipate a high-scoring Marquette game and a lower-scoring Louisville match-up, so we will say 140 total points. Let us know your guesses in the comments.

Monroe honored, Louisville falls

By Hoya Hoops
  • The new rankings were announced yesterday, and Georgetown was ranked #20 in the AP Poll and #18 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll. There were eight Big East teams in the Top 25 of the AP Poll and seven in the Coaches’ Top 25. It was the first time in history that a single conference had eight teams in the AP Top 25.
  • Greg Monroe was named Big East Rookie of the Week for his performance in the Old Spice Classic. Jonny Flynn of Syracuse took home Big East Player of the Week.
  • The Louisville Cardinals lost to Western Kentucky, 68-54, at home on Sunday and dropped from #3 to #11 in both polls as a result.

BET Quarterfinals: Pittsburgh vs. Louisville

By Hoya Hoops

The Big East showed just how powerful a conference it was in the third quarterfinal in Madison Square Garden, as the 7th seed Pittsburgh Panthers defeated the #2 seed Louisville Cardinals 76-69 in overtime. The game was an epic battle as both teams played with maximum effort and tenacious defense. Louisville had the ball trailing by two in the final minute of regulation when Earl Clark grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to tie the game. The Panthers had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but Levance Fields’ contested three-pointer was off the mark.
