Louisville In-Game Thread
By JohnnyHey everybody, Johnny here at the Verizon Center 45 minutes away from Game 6 for the Hoyas in a do-or-die situation as they face the #6 Louisville Cardinals.
Tonight marks the first time that the two most talked about freshmen in the Big East, and possibly in the entire NCAA, face off as Georgetown’s Greg Monroe is set to meet Samardo Samuels. We’ll have to wait and see who wins that individual matchup, but the more important question is if Georgetown can sneak away with a victory. They’ve been playing much better in recent games, but execution down the stretch and closing games is something that has still been missing.
We’ll find out in about three hours when this one’s done, but until then, we’ll just have to wait and see.
You know what to do. I’ll post back with lineups and refs in just a bit.

Looks like Coach is sticking with his new lineup of
Summers, Wright, Mescheriakov, Monroe, and Freeman.
The Cardinals are going to be starting
Terrence Williams, Earl Clark, Samardo Samuels, Andre McGee, and Jerry Smith.
The refs are going to be Karl Hess, Ed Corbett, and Bob Donato.

Right now, they’re thanking Georgetown University Hospital by giving someone a basketball at center court. GU Hospital is sponsoring today’s game and have given out tons of foam fingers. And they also gave out sunglasses to the students.
February 23rd, 2009 at 6:59 pm
It’s time for the starting lineups, and the Verizon Center is VERY empty. The student sections don’t even fill up the lower bowls; they’re just about halfway full on each side.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:00 pm
Mike here in 120. Most important game of the season and the student section is only half full. Hopefully they will make enough noise to make up for their missing friends.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:02 pm
They’re showing Roy Hibbert on the big screen, and he was talking to the Georgetown fans, but there was no audio. So that was a little strange.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:03 pm
Hoyas win the tip and Nikita is fouled on a quick drive to the basket - five seconds in.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:06 pm
Samuels scores over Nikita to give the Cardinals their first lead, 4-2
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:09 pm
Greg’s first foul sends us to the 16:00 timeout, Hoyas trailing 12-7.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:11 pm
The crowd is very quiet early on. The hoyas also have reverted to their sloppy ways. Against Marquette, Georgetown had four first half turnovers. They have already matched that total, and it is only the first timeout.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:14 pm
Hoyas turn it over trying to break the press, which leads to a McGee three, and then Wright needs a timeout to inbound.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:14 pm
Another turnover and the hoyas are down nine. Then they can’t get the ball in on the ensuing inbounds and use a timeout. Sloppy.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:16 pm
Four straight points for the Hoyas, and Pitino wants a timeout. Cardinals still up 16-11.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:17 pm
Good pressure defensively and the Hoyas force a couple of tunovers themselves.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:18 pm
Foul #2 on Summers. 12:44 left in the half.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:19 pm
Jessie’s setting to check in for the first time.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:20 pm
Foul on Sims after what was a nice block up top. That’s the second time ref Karl Hess has smacked himself in the head when signaling the foul.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:20 pm
The Hoyas are settling for long two pointers as an offense. Most have been contested. The Loyisville press is certainly disrupting the hoyas.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:24 pm
Three by Knowles and it’s 23-11 Cardinals.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:24 pm
Seven team fouls on Georgetown to two on Louisville. Jennings to shoot two.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:28 pm
Jessie misses two free throws, and it’s still 26-13 Louisville.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:32 pm
30-17 Louisville with Wright going to the line shooting two after the 8:00 timeout. Vaughn in for Monroe when we get back.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:33 pm
Jiffy Lube Trivia Question of the Game:
Who hold the all-time Georgetown record for scoring average, with 23.00 PPG over the course of his career?
A. Alonzo Mourning
B. Allen Iverson
C. Patrick Ewing
D. Eric Floyd
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:33 pm
Greg Monroe sent in a thunderous dunk. Hopefully it will spark his team. It fired up the crowd.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:36 pm
Away from the ball, touch foul on Nikita, gives him his second and gives Clark a chance for two points.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:40 pm
17 fouls so far and 19 free throws. Problem is Georgetown is 5-10 on their foul shots.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:41 pm
Omar is seeing his first action in several games.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:42 pm
Jonathan Wallace and Tyler Crawford are sitting behind the bench next to Sead.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:43 pm
Some very deflating missed free throws for the Hoyas, and they find themselves down 16. A very large hole to dig themselves out of.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:53 pm
After missing three shots in the first 18 minutes, Louisville missed three more in the last two minutes of the half, and Jessie Sapp’s last second three-pointer put the Hoyas back within 10.
That was not a very good half for Georgetown, committing 9 turnovers and missing 6 free throws, but when the other team is shooting 70% from the field and 100% from three, being behind by ten is not such a bad thing.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:54 pm
Well, given everything, the Hoyas being down ten is not too bad. The team sleepwalked through the first ten minutes. Also, I think that Louisville was perfect from beyond the arc. I’ll check that stat.
February 23rd, 2009 at 8:07 pm
To start the second half, Sapp will be in there instead of Nikita.
February 23rd, 2009 at 8:08 pm
They just played Hibbert’s message again with the audio. I couldn’t make out what he said at the beginning, but he ended with “We are GEORGETOWN”
February 23rd, 2009 at 8:11 pm
Sapp did a nice fake on that fast break and got his shot goaltended to bring it to 41-33.
February 23rd, 2009 at 8:12 pm
Good start for the Hoyas, forcing three turnovers already.
February 23rd, 2009 at 8:18 pm
Big shot there from Wright to cut the lead back to ten. Four minutes into the second half still a ten point game.
February 23rd, 2009 at 8:25 pm
They call foul #3 on Sapp, an over the back, as Jessie tries to rebound it over a Cardinal who just went over Freeman’s back.
February 23rd, 2009 at 8:25 pm
That’s Louisville’s first missed three, 26 minutes in. They had been 7-7.
February 23rd, 2009 at 8:26 pm
Mock cheer from all of Verizon Center as they finally call a foul on Louisville inside. Rightfully, an over the back.
February 23rd, 2009 at 8:27 pm
DaJuan just hit his first shot of the game, a long two pointer.
February 23rd, 2009 at 8:28 pm
Now it’s the loudest I’ve heard the Verizon Center boo in a long time as there were several no calls for the Hoyas, and then Louisville got a breakout.
February 23rd, 2009 at 8:29 pm
Hoyas defense has been very good but they still can’t close the gap. Twelve point defict with twelve minutes to go.
February 23rd, 2009 at 8:31 pm
It’s the 12:00 timeout, Jack the Bulldog is running onto the court, but the students behind be aren’t saying “Eat that box.” They’re chanting, “Eat that ref.”
February 23rd, 2009 at 8:32 pm
There’s a guy here wearing a blue Snuggie with a sign that says “Snuggie Saxa.”
February 23rd, 2009 at 8:36 pm
stupid mistake by wright, missing a fast break that would have cut the lead to eight.
February 23rd, 2009 at 8:36 pm
Chris Wright missed a dunk in transition when there were passing options and of course the option to lay it in.
February 23rd, 2009 at 8:43 pm
Clock isssues cos the Hoyas a basket. The shot clock should have reset but didn’t. Monroe should have dunked the ball despite hearing the buzzer. Now try are ruling it was a shot clock violation. Now the hoyas down 14 without the ball.
February 23rd, 2009 at 8:50 pm
Fast break, this time Wright gives it up, and Monroe sends down a powerful dunk. Quick 30 by Coach Thompson with 4:05 remaining and his Hoyas down 10.
February 23rd, 2009 at 8:51 pm
Hoyas should consider fouling. They are down ten with four to play.
February 23rd, 2009 at 8:52 pm
A minute later, same deal. Layup by Clark cuts it to 10, quick timeout.
February 23rd, 2009 at 8:53 pm
Hoyas should consider fouling. They are down ten with now three to play.
February 23rd, 2009 at 8:58 pm
Hoyas have been fouling, Cardinals have been missing free throws, but as has been the case for the past two months, Hoyas cannot execute down the stretch.
February 23rd, 2009 at 9:06 pm
Finally, after what feels like an hour and a half, Coach has called off the dogs.
February 23rd, 2009 at 9:06 pm
That’ll do it. Hoyas drop their fifth home game of the season, losing to the Louisville Cardinals 58-76.
February 23rd, 2009 at 9:39 pm
To quote the movie Major League…Well, I guess there is only one thing left to do… Win the whole F’n thing…the Big East tournament is our NCAA Tournament.
