Georgetown vs. Villanova: 03/13/2008
Team | 1 | 2 | T |
Villanova | 29 | 34 | 63 |
Georgetown (#9) | 40 | 42 | 82 |
Hey everybody, Johnny here from Madison Square Garden. We’re still a ways away from the opening tip, but there’s already plenty of excitement and anticipation waiting for the Quarterfinal game between Georgetown and Villanova.
We already hooked you up with all you need to know in terms of the last time these two teams met, Villanova’s last game, and the preview for this afternoon’s matchup.
I’ll keep you updated with whatever info I have for you from the Garden, including starting lineups and referees, as soon as I get it. As usual, keep your in-game thoughts coming in the comments as well.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:26 am
Hey Johnny, thanks for doing this! It’s a lifesaver while I’m at work (my 5th period students are going to have to deal with me coming back to my computer every 2 minutes). Hope all is well - and getting better - in NYC.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:35 am
Here’s my view before any fans showed up.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:43 am
Wow. Nice seats. Now root on a victory for those who couldnt make it.
March 13th, 2008 at 11:48 am
thanks for the play by play from those of us who can’t be at the garden.
I’m certainly as excited as if I were there!
March 13th, 2008 at 11:50 am
lets get this game started…and lets start like last year, a 20 point lead by the second tv timout. lets blow em out
March 13th, 2008 at 11:50 am
Right now some Villanova fans in front of me have put their beers and pretzes on the press table beside me. I’m kinda tempted to eat their stuff.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
After the National Anthem performed by the GU Pep Band and Aaron Broadus, here are your starting lineups.
For the Wildcats, it’s gonna be Pena, Cunningham, Reynolds, Anderson, and Stokes.
And for the Hoyas, it’s the usual five of Wallace, Summers, Freeman, Sapp, and Hibbert. Sixth-man of the year is on the bench.
The refs today are
March 13th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
start counting, one reference to the “most controversial call of the season” as they are calling it
March 13th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
hmm no donato today, interesting….
March 13th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
Roy wins the opening tip, and the Hoyas get a long three from Summers on their first possession.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
sweetness for dajuan
March 13th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
They call it that because there’s no controversy about the UCLA calls - just plain wrong.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
Pena gets Villanova on the board, but Wallace responds with a three: 6-2 Hoyas.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
That bump on Wallace earned him two game-winning free throws last time. Here you see what happens when you don’t call it. He is stumbling down the court hobbling trying to regain balance.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
First foul on the Hoyas, first on Hibbert.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
Another pure three from Wallace.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
And now DaJuan has two fouls already. Patrick checks in his place
March 13th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
Sorry Mike, the foul was on Summers, none on Hibbert.
Wallace is 3-3 from beyond the arc. Wright needs a timeout trailing by 8 early on.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
jwall killing them early!!!! keep itup!!
March 13th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Thanks Johnny, I guess that’s the advantage to being at the game, you actually get to know who the fouls are on, instead of relying on the announcers.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
good start for Hoyas. Is there a foul on Roy or not? On the foul on the drive McDonough said it was Hibbert but I think it was Summers
March 13th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
First official timeout, the Hoyas are up 12-4. All four hoops for the Hoyas are from beyond the arc, while the Cats have a tough inside basket from Pena and a pair of free throws from Reynolds. Villanova ball with 15:54 left on the other side of the timeout.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
jwall!!!!!
March 13th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
no foul for hibber there? gimme a break.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
Two pretty bad calls there going against the Hoyas. The refs need to forget the hype and ref this game.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
Make that four. Wow.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
come on! gimme a break with these calls!
March 13th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
nice tip for freeman!!!
March 13th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
That’s Dwayne Anderson’s second foul. And now Chris Wright is checking in or the first time in a looong time.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
assist for wright, nice for his first seconds of action in months
March 13th, 2008 at 12:18 pm
Sapp hits back to back threes, and the Hoyas are leading 20-10.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:18 pm
sapp sapp sapp nailing em!!!!!!!!
March 13th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
Coach is going to his bench early as he brings in Macklin. Maybe now with Wright back he’s going to try to tire out his opponents with an up-paced game.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
that is an abysmal call, he is moving the other way when reynolds throws himslef down
March 13th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
are you kidding me with these calls???
March 13th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Pretty aggressive by Wright on his first minutes. He drove and got hammered and then he dove for aloose ball. I hope his ankle can take it.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
That’s the second team foul on Rivers, team foul number five, and it brings us to the 12 minute timeout. 11:54 left in the half, Hoyas up 20-10, Nova ball. Hoyas on fire from beyond the arc to start this one, with the only miss being the first shot of the game, as Freeman missed an open look.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
another bogus foul against Rivers. Then the ref signals as if it were as viscious forearm.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
come on hoyas, lets try to ignore the horrible calls and play through it
March 13th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
Wallace nails an NBA three with the shotclock winding down - biggest lead for the Hoyas: 23-12.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
golden
March 13th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
silly shot by jessie…well it would have been a good one if he made it but he didnt, so its a silly shot
March 13th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
Travel. You can’t jump stop and pivot.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
That’s three consecutive missed three-pointers for the Hoyas. Maybe they’re cooling down.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Villanova already in the 1 and 1. Villanova has two team fouls.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
cone on hoyas, lets get the ball to roy, enough of these threes
March 13th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
call the fouls when it matters, now roy will get hammered and they wont call anything
March 13th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
Just dropped my students off at lunch…glad to hear that we are up, although it already sounds like there are a lot of fouls on our guys.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Roy’s second foul, team’s eighth, 7:57 left in the half, Hoyas leading 25-15. Cunningham to shoot two free throws when we return. Villanova only has three team fouls. To recap Hoya fouls:
2 on Hibbert
2 on Summers
2 on Rivers
1 on Sapp
1 on Ewing
March 13th, 2008 at 12:31 pm
Oh, and it looks like I forget to mention the refs with the starting lineups. These guys today are Ed Corbett, John Cahill, and Brian O’Connell.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
strong take for jwal
March 13th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
well, we’d rather have the foul on the rebound than on the shot maybe, so that helped us
March 13th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
I dont understand that one. he blocked the shot. How is this their ball?
March 13th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
how is that possible????
March 13th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
sweeeeeetnesssss
March 13th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
Incredible play by Freeman. Completely heady. Sapp tried to give Austin an alley-oop on the fast break, but he wouldn’t have gotten a good shot, so he tipped it back to Ewing (past the speeding defender) for the easy layup.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
dude, someone tell bilas to quit his whining…reynolds tripped on wallace, gimme a break. Raftery sticking up for the hoyas, saying there was no foul whatsoever
March 13th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Thanks for that description, because all Chvotkin did was yell.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
what is this?? play the game, there player is off the court on the bench, we dont need to wait for him to heal before we start playing again.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
Wow, it’s exciting to hear that Wright is coming onto the floor!
March 13th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
Nice thinking there, but you eventually got to shoot it. One too many drive and dishes.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
I have to give Villanova credit for this: their pep band is playing music from The Pirates of the Caribbean.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Loose ball, Nova takes a timeout, Reynolds still on bench trying to stop his head from bleeding so he can reenter. The Hoyas are up 29-17 with 4:57 left in the half.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Bilas showing his Dukie bias
March 13th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
so smooth
March 13th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
There are Chris Wright’s first points since returning from injury. A three to put the Hoyas up 15.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
man, wright makes us sooo much better. and we were pretty damn good beforehand.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
Technical foul on Patrick after that horrible call on Wallace.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
What did Patrick do for the technical?
March 13th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
3:45 to play in the half, Villanova to shoot four free throws, two due to teh foul on Wallace, two because of a technical on Ewing. Watching a replay, I can’t decide which is the worse call. Wallace gets all ball and is whistled for the foul, and Ewing just tosses the ball in the air because its a timeout. No anger at all from Pat, and he gets a technical called on him. Very very poor officiating there. Hoyas lead is 15 before the free throws.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
Let me clarify. There was a foul on Wallace (they announced it as his second, but I believe it is his first). Pat complained. Techincal on Pat, his second personal. Wallace was subbed out for Sapp (so I won’t be able to check on his fouls right now). Lots of free throws coming up for Villanova, who have still only committed four fouls to Georgetown’s 11.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
Good call Mike. I wonder which is worse though, two foul shots in a closely called game throughout. Or four foul shots in a completely one-sided game?
March 13th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
the funny thing is, if somehow we get fouled at the end of the game and it helps us win, thats all the analysts will mention, not the 400 free throws tehy shot.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
can they look at replay and see ewing was fouled on the rebound?
March 13th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
hahahaha hoyas “get bailed out by a foul call?” hilarious
March 13th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
thats a nice play to bounce back
March 13th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
Come on Hoyas….let’s get a stop!
March 13th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
johnny, dont know if you know this, but last time nova made a fg?
March 13th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
ESPN boxscore shows JWAL with only 1 foul
March 13th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
Couldn’t tell you DJ. But Pena just got one right now. What I can tell you is the last time Georgetown got a free throw. The Louisville game.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
1st Nova fg in 8:30
March 13th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
Hoyas call time out, 1:32 left in the half, the lead now only 10. The Hoyas need to keep Villanova from whittling the lead down in these final seconds.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
Yes, only one foul for Wallace.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
incredible shootinf form the little guy
March 13th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
And another three-pointer, his fifth. He already has 19 points.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Wallace missed his first shot of the game, right there. And then after incredible defense, they called a clean block by Sapp a foul
March 13th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
17 fts to 0 for Nova. Show the refs the boxscore
March 13th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
At the half, the Hoyas are winning 40-29. It’s a testament to how well the Hoyas are playing that they are able to have an 11 point lead despite the incredible free throw disparity. Villanova is 15-18 from the stripe. The Hoyas? 0-0.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
Wallace is playing great today. I was sad to see him take that last shot because I liked his perfection. Amazin play from all the shooter so far. keep it up!
March 13th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Get this: Hoyas are shooting 55% from the field, and 63% from behind the arc (10-16). Wallace, as I mentioned went 7-7 from the field - including 5-5 from three - before missing his last two point attempt.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
come on now hoyas, no let up in the second, keep the pressure on, the refs can keep calling all these fouls, at some point nova will have to make a shot
March 13th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
Alright, just got the official stats. I was wrong about the threes. The Hoyas are 10-17 (58.8%). Looks like Rivers’ half court shot at the buzzer would have counted.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Comparing Jonathan Wallace to Villanova:
Wallace is shooting 7-8 from the field, perfect from beyond the arc, to score 19 points.
Villanova is shooting 6-20 from the field, 25% on three pointers, for only 14 points from field goals.
If only Wallace got to shoot 18 free throws in the half…
March 13th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
all right now hoyas, lets go
March 13th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
That miss was Roy’s first shot attempt. He’s gotta do better when his man is a whole foot shorter than him though.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
Third foul on Hibbert. I didn’t see it.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Anderson’s three cuts the lead to six: 40-34 Georgetown. Thompson calls a timeout, which will be stretched to a full.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Early timeout for the Hoyas as the lead has already shrunk to six. It will be stretched to a full. Hoyas up 40-34 with 17:45 left in the game.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
hibbert ran over a nova guy trying to get a loose ball for his 3rd foul.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
nova had a big 2nd half vs cuse.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Great play by Summers gets wiped off for stepping on the baseline. No contact, I guess.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Reynolds hits a three to cut the lead to three. Freeman was hobbling back on defense after landing funny.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
what a horrible way to start the half
March 13th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
I can’t believe my eyes. Roy Hibbert is mugged and gets called for his fourth foul and unimaginable offensive foul.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
wow, an 11 point run for them to start to half….jeez
March 13th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Villanova with a chance to tie the game from the free throw line, shooting one, the score 40-39 for Georgetown, the Wildcats on a 10-0 run to start the half. 16 minute timeout.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Now DaJuan picked up his third, count the basket. Villanova has a free throw to tie the game. There are three fouls on Georgetown this half, 0 for Villanova. Team fouls now are 17-5 on the game.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
the worst display of one-sided refereeing i’ve ever seen. not only the fouls against GU but the ones not called on Nova. Every time we get the ball they hack and swipe and not one foul. We need to be tough as nails to win this game
March 13th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
hoyas need to just relax, keep running the offense, dont let the officials distract us. stay focused
March 13th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Big three by Chris Wright from NBA range.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
big shot, now lets get a defense
March 13th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
Three quick fouls on Nova. Maybe someone told the refs the disparity.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
Come on Pat, it was going in!
March 13th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
gimme a break, the refs think making two calls now will make up for hibberts 4th? no chance
March 13th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
Cunningham’s free throws give Nova their first lead of the game 45-43
March 13th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Here come Georgetown’s first free throws of the night, and Pena now has three fouls.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
offesnevive rebounds killing us today
March 13th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Great play by Patrick. Just what the Hoyas needed, a huge dunk and a foul to change the momentum.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
SEND IT IN!!
March 13th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
finally some calls going our way, gotta make the fts though
March 13th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
You know, we are pretty lucky they didnt eject Pat for hanging on the rim the way this is going. that would have been his second technical.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Strange way to break the press.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Ewing is looking a little gimpy, so Freeman is checking back in.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Nice hands by DaJuan there.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
nice steal by dajuan
March 13th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Three by Sapp puts the Hoyas up by 4.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Wow. Slick play.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Very nice play there, as Sapp threw an alley-oop to Summers cutting backdoor. He couldn’t jam it, but he got an alley-oop layup. Timeout Villanova.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
nice work boys!!!!!!!!
March 13th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Sapp with another three, now both starting guards have 5 from downtown.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
mackin is doing well in hibberts absesne
March 13th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
Macklin with another foul, his fourth. He’s staying in though as Roy also has 4 personals.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
and just as i say it, dumb to for vmack
March 13th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
Freeman three puts Hoyas up 10, but a backcourt steal by Anderson and Vernon’s fifth foul might cancel out that three.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
really really dumb by macklin there, another turnover and then the foul
March 13th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
bilas complains about the charge on the kicked to freeman not being called but no comment on Macklin getting butchered leading to a basket and foul for nova
March 13th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
foul on macklin was BS he didnt touch him
March 13th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Hoyas up 8, 62-54 with 7:32 to play. Villanova shooting one free throw. Hoyas in all kinds of foul trouble now.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
Summers’ three puts the Hoyas back up 10, 66-55. Unbelievable shooting today.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Alright, Vernon’s fouled out. Roy and Pat both have 4. Summers has three, and there are 5 and a half minutes remaining. It might be a very small lineup come the end of this one.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
how is that a shooting foul?
March 13th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
And Roy’s fouled out too now.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
are you kidding me???
March 13th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
well, hopefully next game roy wont get abused by the refs…thank goodness wright can play otherwise we wouldnt have any players left
March 13th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Nice work Hoyas. We need to be tough now with no more bigs.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
beautiful exe-freaking-cution there
March 13th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
gotta make the fts thogh guys, if we stay ahead theyll have to start fouling and we will have to connect
March 13th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Another three from Summers pushes the lead to 12, the biggest of the second half.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
Sapp with the fadeaway three, and Villanova needs a timeout, down by 15 with 3:38 to go.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
kill em
March 13th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
glorious…..this is a great game, it will open things up for hibbert i games to come if we can shoot like this
March 13th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Career day for Sapp. His career highs before today:
Three-point field goals: 4 (vs. Belmont)
Points: 20 (vs. Belmont)
Today: 6 threes, 21 points.
There’s probably more, but I don’t have all the numbers in front of me.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
A Villanova turnover gives the ball back to Georgetown with a little bit of breathing room. Four minute timeout, the Hoyas up 15, 73-58. Georgetown three minutes and 26 seconds away from their third straight Big East Tournament semifinal.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
close em out hoyas, run the offense, use clock, make them run
March 13th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Offensive foul on Sapp, but count the basket, so Villanova goes to the line to shoot two.
March 13th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Woulda loved that dunk to go too.
March 13th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Hibbert is very enthusiastic down on the sideline. He didn’t get too much action with 5 fouls and 1 field goal attempt. But he is still a leader on this team, and he is happy with the way the rest of his team stepped up their game.
March 13th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
hahaha anyone listening to ESPN? Bilas says the main knock against georgetown is that we dont blow teams out. A little ironic to say that in an 18 point game, huh?
March 13th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
come on boys, lets just end this now, two shot clock violations oughta do it
March 13th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Looks like that’ll do it. Nova has called off the guards, and DaJuan has slammed home another two points.
March 13th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
That’s it. Final score: 82-63 Georgetown. I’m going to head to the press conference. Then I’ll be back to watch the Connecticut vs. West Virginia game. Winner gets the Hoyas tomorrow at
noon7:00pm.March 13th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
to paraphrase digger, if roy is not getting 16 shot attempts, then the hoyas will struggle. yeah, a 20 point win is struggling. good analysis. e veryone forgets that we can win in a 1000 different ways.
