Johnny’s Jacksonville Postgame Thoughts

Teams

GU:
Georgetown put on a dominating performance that showed just how deep and versatile this team is. Too much has been said about the “Princeton Offense,” and analysts keep on trying to classify the way Georgetown plays under Coach Thompson III. All these categorizations tend to do, though, is limit what this team can do.

They can play patient basketball, moving without the ball, and lulling defenders to sleep like they did against Duke two years ago. They can play high energy basketball beating teams with spark and momentum like they did against Notre Dame in the Big East Tournament semifinals. And they can play fast paced basketball, running the court quickly and playing high pressure defense, like they did against Jacksonville.

So while the Hoyas did not have a perfect game, and the opponent was not a real threat, what this game showed was that the Hoyas are ready to add another dimension to their game. It is not 100% there yet, but when this team performs as well as they can perform implementing this up tempo style of play, it will really baffle those people who have been trying to peg Georgetown as a slow, deliberate team.

Jac:
What can you say about a team that coming into the game had played three straight road games and was going up against one of the best in the nation? They tried hard, they fought, but they didn’t have enough in them, and given the circumstances, it would have been amazing if they had.

Players

GU:
Vernon Macklin got to see a lot of playing time on Sunday, as he notched 25 minutes, the most he’s seen all season. In those minutes, he managed to go 3-3 from the field and rack up 7 points. His athleticism allowed him to keep pace with the quick backcourt as he participated in the fast breaks and had some nice plays.

There were a couple of times that he would have made highlight reels if he hadn’t been fouled, so the biggest issue with Vernon is his free-throw shooting. It’s not a good sign when a player who gets major minutes in the rotation gets raucous applause from the fans when he finally hits from the stripe. If he doesn’t improve, he will have trouble getting minutes in close game situations because the other teams can revert to a Hack-a-Mack approach and get the ball back without wasting any clock.

Jac:
Aric Brooks had a good game for the Dolphins, as in his 11 minutes off the bench he scored five points off of 2-3 shooting and he stripped the Hoyas for three steals. Seeing that no one for Jacksonville scored in double figures, his performance off the bench was definitely one of the good things Jacksonville could take away from this game.

Coaches

Jacksonville Head Coach Cliff Warren said in the postgame press conference that he wasn’t surprised by the Hoyas’ fast paced attack; he knew what Georgetown was capable of, but his team just didn’t have anything to stop it. That’s the kind of comment Georgetown fans want to hear more of from opposing coaches as the season progresses.

On the other end, Coach Thompson wasn’t too concerned with the 20 turnovers because a faster paced game leads to more possessions and in turn more turnovers. What he was concerned about, though, was the lack of fouls in the first half. He wasn’t encouraging his team to foul more, but he thought the number may point to a lack of aggression on defense.

Referees

It didn’t look good when a minute into the game, the refs had already pointed the wrong way on a ball that went out of bounds and one had to overturn another. But the game wasn’t a total fiasco, and other than that brief incident, the refs held it together for most of the game.

Fans

There were not too many fans at this game as it’s getting closer to exams and Christmas break. But the ones who did make the trip had a good showing given the lack of competitiveness on the court.

Number of the Game

11: Number of players who scored for the Hoyas. Of the 12 players who got minutes on Sunday (the entire roster excluding the ineligible Nikita), all but Bryon Jansen made it on the score sheet. Jansen only played for two minutes, and he never had a shot attempt.

100 Wins

We’ve been talking a lot about the Verizon Center lately, as Georgetown is celebrating their 10th anniversary in the building. On Sunday, the Hoyas notched their 100th victory in Chinatown, and while it may have taken them a little too long to do so, a congratulations is in order for the Hoyas on achieving this accomplishment. Congratulations.
