Tony’s Radford Postgame Thoughts
By TonyTeams
GU:
The Hoyas must’ve been very anxious to get back on the court after 6 days off since their previous game. They were on target from the start and the game looked like the perfect release for college kids who have been dealing with exams all week.
Rad:
The Highlanders are better than they showed on Saturday, but they were ambushed by the Hoyas from the tip. Radford was down 6-0 after a pair of Georgetown three-pointers and the deficit was never manageable.
Players
GU:
Coach Thompson got to play 12 players in the game and everybody for the Hoyas contributed. The first half was such a clinic for the Hoyas that Roy Hibbert didn’t attempt a shot in the first 20 minutes, and Georgetown still led by 24 points at halftime.
Rad:
Radford has a number of DC area players on the team, but none of them had a homecoming to be proud of. Martell McDuffy from Laurel, MD and DeMatha High School had a particularly tough night. He entered the game averaging about 15 points per game, but only scored 9 versus Georgetown. He missed all 7 of his three-point attempts.
Coaches
Coach Thompson continues to make the most of the recent comfortable wins for the Hoyas. There have been extensive minutes for the nine key players in the rotation, and Tyler Crawford, who seems like the tenth man, has been more involved in recent weeks. The reserves are not just coming in during the final minutes, but getting lots of time in the first half when there is more real pressure.
On the other end, there were a number of hard fouls committed by the Highlanders, and a couple of technical fouls as well. Afterwards, the coach defended his players saying that they were just trying to fight back. It seemed like Coach Brad Greenberg was proud of the aggression and competitiveness for a group of players who were clearly overmatched physically.
Fans
The fans were great. It was the ideal atmosphere for McDonough, and it gave the Hoyas a glimpse of what could be commonplace if Georgetown ever completes their on-campus arena. The students may have gotten a little carried away near the end of the game when they started chanting, “We Want Memphis” - whether the Hoyas want Memphis or not, it should have nothing to do with the lopsided outcome against Radford.
Number of the Game
74.2: That’s the field goal percentage from the Hoyas’ starters against Radford. The starting five went 23-31 from the field. The only thing more impressive than their shooting was the fact that Coach Thompson said that he expects to see those kinds of numbers throughout the season.
Rivers’ Ups
My favorite play of the game was in the middle of the first half when Jeremiah Rivers was leading a fast break. Nobody from Radford stopped the ball, so Rivers went all the way to the front of the rim. It looked like he had planned on just laying it up, but at the last moment he tried to dunk it. He missed the dunk and the Hoyas lost the ball out of bounds. Nevertheless, the move was great and the elevation was better. Rivers is a smart player with coaching in his blood. Next time he won’t be thinking layup, and he will throw it down. I look forward to it.
